Despite continuing low ratings, FOX renewed The Last Man on Earth TV show for a fourth season. Season four can be a dangerous time for low-rated TV series. While 100 episodes still may be the gold standard for syndication, in recent years, packages with 88 episodes or so (i.e. four seasons of around 22 episodes each) have sold well. However, this sitcom has had shorter than average seasons. A total of only 49 episodes were produced during its first three installments. Could that low count help it snag another pickup? Will The Last Man on Earth be cancelled or renewed for season five? Stay tuned. *See update below.
A FOX post-apocalyptic comedy, The Last Man on Earth stars Will Forte, Kristen Schaal, January Jones, Mel Rodriguez, Mary Steenburgen, and Cleopatra Coleman. After a deadly virus devastates the planet, Phil Tandy Miller (Forte) believes he’s the last human alive. Eventually, he finds other survivors and alternates between misery and elation. In season four, to avoid nuclear fallout, the survivors set sail for Mexico, even though none of them know how to pilot the boat. They also have to squeeze in two new passengers, Pamela (Kristen Wiig) and her dog, Jeremy.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. The way season 4 ended is bs to not make a season 5. I dont have basic tv service and i use hulu. I am a huge fan of the show and am very upset that it will not continue. It is by far my favorite show. Please reconsider continuing.
This show was recommended to me a month ago and now I am HOOKED!!!! Please don’t cancel this show! I have a few episodes of Season 4 left and I am so sad and need to know what happens! AND I have been telling everyone how funny this show is! It has made me laugh, cringe, cry, and really got me thinking! So please Fox, don’t take it away!
Please don’t cancel, this show is hilarious! I love cliffhangers, they are equally exciting and frustrating. They really make you look forward to the next season.
Permanent cliffhangers just stink.
At the very least, please allow enough episodes to answer all of our many questions…especially, “Who are all those people?!?!?”
Yes, the ratings have been low. Yes, TV shows are a business that needs to profit. But please don’t forget about the fans who have been loyal, never missing an episode. We love this show.

No please don’t cancel this show. My 8 year old and I love watching this together. I’m so sad to tell him we won’t be able to find out what’s going to happen with the crowd of people on the last scene. I’m lretty sure he will cry. Hopefully something silly and light hearted that I can enjoy with my young children will come on and our family time can be filled with belly laughs the way this show did. I’m so disappointed to be honest.
