Season three of The Last Ship just ended. Recently, showrunner Steven Kane spoke with TVLine about the season three finale and what’s next for the TNT series.
The drama follows the crew of the USS Nathan James as they hunt for the cure to a virus that has wiped out most of the world’s population. The cast includes Eric Dane, Bridget Regan, Adam Baldwin, Travis Van Winkle, and Marissa Neitling. TNT has already renewed The Last Ship for a fourth and fifth season.
In the interview, Kane said there was no backup plan for a series finale in case the show was cancelled after season three:
No, I kind of throw everything I have into every season. We know that if the series had ended [last summer] with the shooting of Rachel, it would have been a really shocking and awful way to end a run, but at the same time we felt like there would be some closure — they brought home the cure and the audience can sort of suppose what life would be like in the future. Similarly, if we ended the show now with Chandler going off, I guess it would be sort of a farewell, as I said, to one of the Founding Fathers of the new country and the audience would have to speculate, “Gee, I wonder where he would have gone?” But at least the problem of the season was solved.”
He also added that there will be a tough transition in season four:
Yeah, how do you keep getting up, putting on your uniform and getting out there into the fight when everything you love and trust keeps getting taken away from you? You try and try and try, yet you still can’t protect those you care most deeply for? That’s a heavy burden. Even George Washington, after two terms and 45 years as a public servant and as a general and founding the country, was like, “You know what? I’m done, I’m going to go back to my plantation and sort of take stock.” So in some ways, Chandler is the Founding Father of this new country and no one begrudges him to a certain degree his desire to disappear for a while. But at the same time, there are still a lot of people who count on him as a Founding Father, so it’s not going to be an easy transition.”
Season four of The Last Ship is expected to debut in 2017.
What do you think? Do you watch The Last Ship? Did you find the season three finale satisfying?
My husband and I watch last ship faithfully we enjoy it very much and I know my daughter tapes it to watch when she can. We wish the shows on for a while but we’ll miss Wolf that was a bummer loosing him.
The first two seasons were great. The third had great action but you’ve killed off so many great characters that your slowly but surely killing the show. Some of the new people have no personalities and who wants to see a female Tom Chandler (Brigette Regan) who has nothing to act with and her part with Chandler boring. You can’t replace a Rhona with a Brigette. I was so pleased to see TeX and what did they do but kill him. Most long running show keep their main characters. That’s why they stay successfully. Somebody does not seem to know… Read more »
Why do you continually kill off leading actors is beyond me. Those who believe that this season was a good season has even a.)not have watch the whole series d
b.)really they don’t understand the concept of the show or c.) you’re just saying it without any meaning.
David It was a good one, to bad for TEX and lets hope for a 4th season it got to be better, who will be the enemy this time? guerrilla war? new coalition of different governments ? needs to be a good plot and realistic
I actually love the show… I thought all the season were great I like the first one the most tho
Season three was really bad. But last season episode was good. Not as good two before it.
The ratings were certainly good enough for it to be renewed. The fact that the they were possibly thinking of cancelling it is sad. Fortunately, it will be back for at least 2 more seasons.
……….worthy .. My reply is gone how odd…
