Murphy Brown recently wrapped its 11th season, but will there be a 12th? Recently, creator Diane English spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the future of the CBS TV show.
A revival, the comedy series stars Candice Bergen as the titular Murphy Brown, who is now hosting the CNC morning show, Murphy in the Morning. The cast also includes Grant Shaud, Faith Ford, and Joe Regalbuto, Nik Dodani, Jake McDorman, Adan Rocha, and Tyne Daly.
In the interview, English told THR there are political issues to address if CBS renews Murphy Brown for a second season:
It depends on what’s going on. If there’s a season two for us, we wouldn’t be back in the writers room until May. That’s six months from now, so who knows what kind of situation we’d be in. I don’t think I would want to be more political, but certainly the show has always been flinty and sharp in its approach to things. Our main thing is, can we make it funny? Can we make people laugh and at the same time get them to think about something? Especially in this era of Fox News when so many people are just getting their information from one source, and that source is so biased. And the same with CNN.
And what are the chances of a renewal? English says she’s optimistic:
We’re in a tough time slot, opposite football, and at 9:30. It’s kind of tough for comedy, but we’re doing better than what was there before. We win our time slot in entertainment programming almost weekly. And so I think it bodes well. I’m optimistic. I haven’t been told anything yet, but I’ll learn more very soon.”
What do you think? Did you see the Murphy Brown revival? Would you watch another season?
Yes, please keep Murphy on the air, with her whole ensemble from the old show. And I like the addition of her son and what Tyne Daly is doing as the new Phil.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Comedy without foul language and talking about today . Funny and thought provoking.
Have loved Murphy Brown from Season 1, Episode 1, and the revival just gets better and better. Please keep airing this show, our (Candice Bergen’s and mine “50’s-60’s”) will keep watching as long as you will air for us.
Please keep doing Murphy Brown, loved it from the start, and will love it as long as you keep airing, so “PLEASE” give us another season.
Waiting to watch more Murphy Brown! It was funny and refreshing and a great change from the mediocre stuff on tv. It made me think and laugh out loud! Please bring back Murphy Brown. Please!
Love the Murphy Brown show. We look forward to it every week. Watched the original episodes and now the latest.
We think it’s the best comedy on tv and the only one that has real comedy. Please bring it back.
Yes, Please. We really enjoyed the show (and were big fans of the original series). We never missed an episode of the reboot and though it was as good as the original. Please bring it back!
Pure and simple, love the show needs to continue. Wonderful that it was brought back, part of television ‘s history making culture!! BRAVO!
Love Murphy Brown. Please bring it back. Smart. Witty. Not too political but just enough. Love seeing the cast together again. Think Tyne Daly is great in her role too. Great to see actors older than me on TV too.
Never saw the original, my loss. Some good lines but lacked consistently good writing. Understand it is a sitcom, but too many one shot lines, seemed like it was geared to a third grade level. Cast seemed too much like cartoon characters. Would keep Candace Bergen, she recycles wonderfully, but ditch the other cast member except Tyne Daly and give some meat to the new characters.
I hope this show is renewed, I have always been a fan. I think it wasn’t exactly as good as the original but that can be rectified. Don’t try to hard to be political.Just do like the original show and do a mixture of politics and comedy without being preachy. I think the show can come back on top!
The show was awful! Just a constant hit job on this administration in office. Like it or not…we have a President. The office deserves respect . PERIOD! You wouldn’t see this show ever knocking the Obama years. Need to leave politics out of these comedies. Poking a little fun is humorous…THIS SHOW was a hit piece!
The people of America, not to mention our allies and people around the globe deserve RESPECT too Deb. You apparently do not keep up with what Trump is “really” doing in that position, and the show has been extremely kind to that administration, they have to be the worst “real” group of representatives in the White House ever assembled.
I think this is the best tv show in years! I sure hope it continues!!
I’m sure you like the taste of ceiling paint as well.
Me and my family very much enjoy the Murphy Brown Show. We love the characters and the extremely funny episodes. Please bring the series back for as many seasons as the cast will allow! I’m confident the writers will continue to bring joy, happiness and especially humor to households when with a baffoon of a president, we all need to laugh!
I love the show and would be disappointed if it didn’t return
