canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Sun Records: No Season Two for CMT Music Drama

by Cindy McLennan, May 5, 2017

Sun Records TV show on CMT: canceled, no season 2 (canceled or renewed?)

Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.

A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.

Deadline reports:

While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.

“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”

Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings

The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers.  While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).

Sun Records TV show on CMT: canceled, no season 2 (canceled or renewed?)

What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?

I liked that Sun Records followed Nashville. I looked forward to watching. The music was great and entertaining and was going to take the place of Nashville for me. The writer’s stupid decision to kill off Rayna James on Nashville has eliminated that show from my must watch list. I’m hoping they were just doing a bad dream scene and she comes back. I own all of the CD’s for Nashville and can’t even believe writers would be so lazy as to write her off and out.

I’m kind of pissed off. That was a cool show, but I didn’t think anybody knew about it so I tried to spread the word. I guess it’s hard to compete with zombies and whatever Game of Thrones is about. I hope they remarket it and try again. I watched each show twice because I thought it was so good.

What are you serious! I love the show Sun Records I was looking forward to watching a season two of Sun Records. Why would they cancel this show? It was such a great show. I wanted to watch more of this show. I love watching Chad Michael Murray in this show. And hearing music from Elvis, and all the other famous singers and bands from back then. Loved the series, followed it religiously. Wanted to see series two. What’s it take to see this series go on? In many ways better than Nashville. Much more interesting story line.

That’s too bad. I was very much enjoying the show and it was only getting better. I was really looking forward to the millionaire quartet which we never got to see sing together. I hope they reconsider and run it after Nashville every week

I think it should be renewed. It is a very good show. I looked forward to watching each week. I feel a little jipped because it made me feel like I was left hanging. Why introduce Carl Perkins if it isn’t going to go no further. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!

It was a fine show. I didn’t watch on CNT but paid to watch it after the Season on Amazon. This will net them much money in years to come. Keep the cast together and do Season 2.

It seems everytime I really love a show it is taken off. I had been eagerly waiting for this show and so short lived. I think it should be renewed.
