Earlier, we reported that there will be no second season of The Young Pope. Instead, HBO has ordered a second installment from creator Paolo Sorrentino called The New Pope. Recently, star Jude Law spoke with Variety about the future of the TV series.
A drama, The Young Pope stars Jude Law as Lenny Belardo, a conservative archbishop who becomes the first American pope. The cast also includes Diane Keaton, Silvio Orlando, Javier Cámara, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Ludivine Sagnier, Toni Bertorelli, and James Cromwell.
In the interview, Law said he wasn’t expecting a second season of The Young Pope:
It wasn’t that I wrapped it up assuming that I was done with it but I went in, we went in, to make a 10-hour film, and we did that. To say that there wasn’t room for more, I’d have been foolhardy. But it was clear from the get-go that we thought this is a great character and it’s a great world that he’s created here. But yeah, I didn’t go in thinking I’ll be doing this for the next 10 years.”
Later, Law discussed how the current political climate could influence The New Pope:
We were fortunate in that the election in America and the political climate internationally seemed to suddenly demonstrate what Paolo had speculated on through the drama. And you could argue it played to our favor. But I think clever writing and good writers have a finger on the pulse, or have their antennae to the world’s peculiar sort of pendulum swings in social movements anyway. I think it would be foolish and irresponsible not to push that a little further in the current climate. It was a “what if” and suddenly it became an, “Oh, this is it.””
Production on The New Pope is scheduled to begin next year in Italy.
What do you think? Did you watch The Young Pope? Will you watch The New Pope?
I loved the young pope and the characters were superb. all of them, especially Jude Law. Hoping they will be in the next season, Ill try the first one. I just know as in the young [pope, I was hooked from Episode one. So when the new pope comes, Ill give it a shot. It either pulls me or doesnt.
If Law is the pope yes…if he isn’t then NO
I will only watch with Jude Law otherwise no
I was so looking forward to seeing Jude Law in the young Pope for a second season. I’ll watch for a new pope hopefully it will be as good as the young Pope.
I can hardly wait for the new pope to arrive I was so sad to see the young Pope over
Big mistake making no 2nd serise, this was the most thought provoking series in years, Jude Law nailed the part and the production values were sublime. Please Mr director and Hbo think again make a the 2nd and end Lennies story properly.
I thought Jude Law was excellent in this roll as Lenny. I looked forward to watching him on Sunday as well as the cast who played in it. I as well as a group of my friends are very upset that this story will change. We left each Sunday wanting to know more about every one we saw that night. It was so well written that you couldn’t wait for the next episode. Why do you feel this needs to be changed to the New Pope? We feel we want to know more about Lenny and Mary. The old saying… Read more »
The potential for so much more of Lenny s life, both before and after his “death” (if he did indeed die) is enormous and would make riveting viewing. The series gave a fascinating insight into the politics of the Catholic Church, as well as showing the laity exactly what it would become should an ultra conservative ever be elected. Quite terrifying! There were too many loose ends left dangling for it to be the last of the series, but if Judy Law cannot continue with the role then anther actor, capable of his air of silent, implacable menace, must play… Read more »
I love every min. And my whole church can’t wait for more.
Was really disappointing news. We invested so much into Lenny’s journey and now it abruptly ends. The focus on the abandonment, while central, was overplayed, in my opinion, but not so much if in the scope of a longer series. I hoped to get clarity on what happened that day in Colorado on the bank of the river, prior to his parents decision to abandon him to Sister Mary’s care. And it’s wasn’t until almost mid-season before we began reaching the realization that the true intentions of Pope Pius were righteous in seeing his “plan” through. It was rewarding for… Read more »
Really disappointed that Jude Law won’t continue as lead in The Young Pope. The show was so revelatory and fresh and different but Jude Law was mesmerizing.
I’m gutted that Jude aLaw will not be doing a second series. I lived for that weekly show and was waiting expectantly for series 2. BIG disappointment for me.
I feel gutted too. It was the same for me that I felt so happy week to week waiting for each new episode. It was intellectually stimulating and emotionally it touched on so much that no other show is capable of. Lenny’s story is only partially told. He had the most psychologically rich make up of any character I’ve ever seen. The surface was only scratched in season one. A second season done properly would have given viewers something that had never been seen on TV before. Now it will never happen. I’m not going to watch this spin off… Read more »

I really loved the first season of the Young Pope. Jude Law made the series and it would be a shame not to continue with him in the lead. I hope he will be casted as the Pope again.
