CBS is in some hot water over MacGyver. According to Deadline, CBS Studios is being sued by a third party over the reboot TV show.
Based on the hit ’80s action series, the reboot centers on Angus “Mac” MacGyver (Lucas Till), a 20-something adventurer who creates a secret organization within the US government so he can use his vast scientific knowledge and extraordinary talent for unconventional problem solving to save the world. The cast also includes George Eads, Tristin Mays, Justin Hires, and Meredith Eaton.
According to Deadline, two groups (Hanzer Holdings and Arlita Inc.) are suing CBS Studios for payments owed based on a deal dating back to the original MacGyver.
Apparently, the plaintiffs are the “successors in interest” to Major Talent Agency, the company that was the packaging agent for the original series back in the 1980s. It seems back then a deal was made that entitled Major Talent Agency to a “packaging commission” for any spin-off to the original MacGyver.
Now, the successors to Major Talent Agency are suing CBS Studios for not paying this “packaging commission” since the MacGyver reboot debuted in 2016.
CBS Studios has not released a comment.

Not a spin-off, like Hawaii Five-0 this is a remake, a spin-off is like JAG and NCIS. Obviously someone is trying to cut themselves a slice of the pie that they have no right to have.
It’s not a spinoff. A spinoff is a continuation. Being a huge fan of the original I almost didn’t watch this one but am glad I did. It is a lot of fun and maintains the spirit of the original. I just wish Richard Dean Anderson would show up. 🙂
No, it’s not a spinoff. A spinoff would be like a continuation of the original series with the same original actor or a facsimile of the original series. The new series is a REMAKE of the original series like a few series and movies. Because of time span involved, it’s not a spinoff
This is a fun show to watch. It certainly can’t be considered a spin off. I like the imagination of Mac, and how creative he is in making things from nothing.
I don’t feel this is a spinoff of the orginal. There are too many character differences

This is NOT a spin-off. They took a show,that was great and modernized it. You can only be so old to be able to keep up with the action. Shows lose a good time slot, and end up closing. Well, those of us that are now senior citizens can relate to this. It’s the same show, but better. They’re doing basically the same things, only its not a spin-off.

Not a spin off. This is a ridiculous concept which took legal 2 years to come up with. Desperate measures. It’s a shame. Between Eads & now this they’re really trying to kill a good show. Too bad!!
This is not a spinoff. A spinoff is a show that happens with a minor character of the original and a different plot line. This is the same show with a more modern flair
if payments are due dating back to the original series, aren’t those payments ABC’s or whoever produced the original series’ responsibilities and not CBS’s or the current producers

This lawsuit is ridiculous. Not the people or the company that the alleged agreement was with, and not a spinoff. Greed.
