Despite pretty low ratings in the prized 18-49 demographic, CBS has kept Madam Secretary on the air. How will it do in season three? Will the numbers go up or down? Will the series be cancelled or is it essentially guaranteed to be renewed to make sure it has enough episodes for syndication? Stay tuned.
On Madam Secretary, Elizabeth McCord (Tèa Leoni) is the shrewd and determined Secretary of State who drives international diplomacy. She battles office politics and circumvents protocol as she negotiates global and domestic issues, both at the White House and at home. The cast also includes Tim Daly, Željko Ivanek, Bebe Neuwirth, Patina Miller, Geoffrey Arend, Erich Bergen, Wallis Currie-Wood, Kathrine Herzer, and Evan Roe.
The ratings are typically the best sign of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
3/23 update: Madam Secretary has been renewed for season four on CBS. Details here.
5/22 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The second season of Madam Secretary averaged a 1.20 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 10.10 million total viewers.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you still like the Madam Secretary TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for season four on CBS?
I love it. Please renew.
The show seems to be better as it continues. Keep it.
Another show just shot itself in the foot. Their fault, couldn’t leave a good show alone. I won’t bother taping this one again!
Madam Secretary is one of the best shows on television. Please do not cancel it. I constantly watch past episodes and always look forward to current weeks episode. You should chance the day this show is on as it is always being preempt for football, awards shows, which I hate, and who knows what else. Put it on a week night and stop with the sports and stupid award shows.
We always watch. Episode 21 was one of the best written, directed and acted episodes I have ever seen. The characters and story line were so well developed. Keep it up. And certainly don’t cancel!
Madame Secretary is a very smart show – and dramatic, too. It’s neat how it seems to follow current events. The acting is superb. I will look for it next Fall. Fingers crossed.
I love this show it’s current with political reality and the cast is excellent. A lot of my friends of the over 50 crowd love it. So the 18-49 group isn’t always so important. Hint! It’s also great to see a woman play such an important position on TV. It’s the closest I’ve seen to the West Wing Series. If it has another season 4. Let it end properly not like a hundred other shows cancelled with no real end.
This is a great show. It has a solid and capable cast (remarkable actually when you look at the ensemble talent) and it has a message that says in political spaces one does not always need to shoot first. Hopefully the prized 18-49 demographic will see some entertainment value in this. Being part of the “over 50 so you do not count demographic” I see the show as hopeful and aspirational for women and I appreciate the good writing and great acting.
This is a smart, well written show. It features a family that actually cares about one another, and features topics that are relevant in todays world. Quit bumping it and you will actually be giving it a real chance.
Love the show. One of four I tape so not to misd
Love the show and everyone on it.
I love the show, Madam Secretary. Please don’t cancel. I record it & watch when convenient with my schedule.
I love how both Tea and Tim’s characters are so flawed. Even with the best of intentions, things go very wrong much of the time, but they are usually able to pull things out of the fire in the end. There is no sugar-coating anything, and the parents are actually more intelligent than their offspring. I am so tired of the cursing, cut-throat, let’s always go to bed before we even know each other’s names stupidity of shows anymore. Most are such an insult to intelligence. One could truly believe they are designed to brainwash the masses, and send the… Read more »
