Despite pretty low ratings in the prized 18-49 demographic, CBS has kept Madam Secretary on the air. How will it do in season three? Will the numbers go up or down? Will the series be cancelled or is it essentially guaranteed to be renewed to make sure it has enough episodes for syndication? Stay tuned.
On Madam Secretary, Elizabeth McCord (Tèa Leoni) is the shrewd and determined Secretary of State who drives international diplomacy. She battles office politics and circumvents protocol as she negotiates global and domestic issues, both at the White House and at home. The cast also includes Tim Daly, Željko Ivanek, Bebe Neuwirth, Patina Miller, Geoffrey Arend, Erich Bergen, Wallis Currie-Wood, Kathrine Herzer, and Evan Roe.
The ratings are typically the best sign of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
3/23 update: Madam Secretary has been renewed for season four on CBS. Details here.
5/22 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The second season of Madam Secretary averaged a 1.20 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 10.10 million total viewers.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you still like the Madam Secretary TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for season four on CBS?
It’s one of the best shows on television. I can’t believe Candy Crush is on in its place.
I love Madam Secretary. I love that it’s a bit of intrigue, politics, family and international settings . Not a lot of sex and violence, but not too hokey. I like learning about the job that a decent Secretary of State could do. It gives me hope that there are people out there that can figure out compromise to our worlds problems. It is my favorite TV show.
This is my number one show, I look forward to Sunday nights. I don’t have any other favorites at this time.
I love the show Madam Secretay. It is one of two regularly scheduled shows that I watch every week barring some interruptions of award shows and sports that I never watch.. Tea Leone and Tim Day are the dynamic duo. I love the fast wit, interactions with the staff, home life drama, working in the State Department and the complexity of diplomacy and international politics. It is one of the few shows that interest me and foolow week after week. Please save this show. The replacement Candy Crush showing now is an insult to my intelligence.
I am afraid I do not watch regular TV hardly ever (watching Netflix instead), but I wanted to say Madam Secretary is exceptional. It is a well-written (kudos to the writers!), faced paced, political drama whereby the story, characters, and dialogue are expressed at the highest quality level. It delves into life itself; love, family, friends, jealousy, anger, grief, death, murder, war and peace. What more can one want in a show? I see many types of film genre and it is uplifting to have this particular drama to watch. Why do the producers always give these shows death slots.… Read more »
love it – high quality
Keep quality. PLEASE1
I am 40 (fall within that 18-49 demo) and thoroughly enjoy the show and it’s issues tackled! Especially the home scenes how family is affected by one’s work. Great writing and a talented cast! Keep it up!
THIS SHOW sucks. Tea Leoni is a bad actress. Tortured performances. It’s a poor man’s version of Homeland . Stinks.
The only show besides the news that my husband and I routinely watch is Madam Secretary. This season just kept getting better and better. Please renew and give us another great season of one of the best shows on TV these days…..it is part of our salvation today giving us a great informed look into government with intelligence and integrity.
Best show on CBS
I have already posted a very positive comment on Madame Secretary. However, I want to ask you why you judge a program on the 18 to 49 year olds

My current favorite show. Timely storylines, suspense, great cast & acting. Just don’t make too Hillaryesque as heroine. You’ll lose us.
I love the show. Please keep it. It truly is one of a kind.
Please keep the show. It really is a good reference for good diplomacy, many politicians, and public servants can emulate effective leadership from this tv series. I love how it’s so educational and fun to watch!
