Although it just premiered on PBS last night, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show has been cancelled after only one season, by ITV. A prequel to the Helen Mirren police drama, and adapted from the Lynda La Plante novel Tennison, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show aired on the UK network as Prime Suspect 1973.
Prime Suspect: Tennison stars Stefanie Martini as Jane Tennison. The ITV and PBS TV series cast also includes: Sam Reid, Blake Harrison, Alun Armstrong, Ruth Sheen, Jessica Gunning, Andrew Brooke, Nick Sidi, Geraldine Somerville, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Nancy Carroll, Rosie Day, Lex Shrapnel, Jay Taylor, Jacob James Beswick, Joshua Hill, Daniel Ezra, Tommy McDonnell, and Jordan Long.

ITV’s Prime Suspect prequel has been axed after just one run, despite pulling in six million viewers.
The decision not to reorder the retro series, set in 1973, comes after an unfortunate fallout with author Lynda La Plante .
It starred Stefanie Martini as a younger version of Helen Mirren’s character Jane Tennison, when she was a rookie PC.
La Plante had originally been lined up to adapt her novel Tennison for the channel, but later quit the production, citing artistic differences.
At the time she claimed to have been left “very sad” by the fallout, but declined to say what sparked it.
ITV drafted in another writer with bosses saying they were “grateful” to Lynda for allowing them to adapt her “brilliant book”.
She has since penned a follow-up novel, Hidden Killers, which sees Tennison as a detective in the late 70s. But ITV said there were no plans to adapt it.
“We’re very happy with the performance of Prime Suspect 1973 but not everything is meant to run and run,” said one source.

It’s so disappointing that there will be no season 2. I really enjoyed the series and was looking forward to the next great season!
I am again disappointed that another English mystery series has been cancelled. I enjoyed Tennison and was looking forward to more. I guess maybe English series cannot be counted on. So why bother to even start? I am an American with a love for English mystery tv. I prefer English over American mystery any day .
Just rented the series through Amazon Prime and loved it! Was so looking forward to more with Stephani Martini and the rest of the cast.
Awwwww, how EXCITED we were to watch this prequel, Prime Suspect, Tennison, in its frst season! Held our breaths waiting for another season, but MUST EXHALE, since there will be no season 2. A shame! Well-done in every way! Disappointments are so miserable with fine series’ like this.
So disappointing! Just watched it on Prime! Was looking forward to watching following seasons! Watched Prime Suspect all the way thru years ago this was an excellent prequel and sadly I can’t watch. Poor decision!
Extremely disappointed that this terrific show has been sacked. Great casting with solid actors made the backstory interesting and fun. Characters are so human and flawed they make for more realistic storytelling. I hope someone comes to their senses soon. There’s too much other trash on TV. Bring our Jane back!

This was an excellent series and the performances of the cast superb. I am so disappointed that it was not continued. This was one of the highest quality detective shows. Please reconsider!
You are kidding me! Cancelled?! Wailing and gnashing of teeth here in California! I evidently managed to miss the news. That amazing series I binge-watched last year just popped into my head, and I resolved to check if the second season was available. Awful! Boo! From the ITV announcement I got the impression that the story isn’t as straightforward as a refusal to continue by the author — they seem to have worked with other writers at some subsequent point. But perhaps I’m just wishfully hoping there’s another path forward…. In one word — bummer.

I am disappointed that ITV has canceled Prime Suspect as a result of artistic differences with the author. I watched all of the season and would definitely watch more.
As I scroll through the TV listings I depressingly see that X factor is still on. I gave up on this show 5 years ago, its truly depressing to see ITV throw money at Simon Cowell &co for an irrelevant programme where the so called winner disappears into oblivion, or is soon seen dancing on ice or eating insects in a jungle! My point is ITV seems to have lost its soul and cancelled good high rated programs like PS1973 which I unequivocally love for dross. I think it’s a real shame there will be no season 2. I thought the first season was really good !
