Although it just premiered on PBS last night, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show has been cancelled after only one season, by ITV. A prequel to the Helen Mirren police drama, and adapted from the Lynda La Plante novel Tennison, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show aired on the UK network as Prime Suspect 1973.
Prime Suspect: Tennison stars Stefanie Martini as Jane Tennison. The ITV and PBS TV series cast also includes: Sam Reid, Blake Harrison, Alun Armstrong, Ruth Sheen, Jessica Gunning, Andrew Brooke, Nick Sidi, Geraldine Somerville, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Nancy Carroll, Rosie Day, Lex Shrapnel, Jay Taylor, Jacob James Beswick, Joshua Hill, Daniel Ezra, Tommy McDonnell, and Jordan Long.

ITV’s Prime Suspect prequel has been axed after just one run, despite pulling in six million viewers.
The decision not to reorder the retro series, set in 1973, comes after an unfortunate fallout with author Lynda La Plante .
It starred Stefanie Martini as a younger version of Helen Mirren’s character Jane Tennison, when she was a rookie PC.
La Plante had originally been lined up to adapt her novel Tennison for the channel, but later quit the production, citing artistic differences.
At the time she claimed to have been left “very sad” by the fallout, but declined to say what sparked it.
ITV drafted in another writer with bosses saying they were “grateful” to Lynda for allowing them to adapt her “brilliant book”.
She has since penned a follow-up novel, Hidden Killers, which sees Tennison as a detective in the late 70s. But ITV said there were no plans to adapt it.
“We’re very happy with the performance of Prime Suspect 1973 but not everything is meant to run and run,” said one source.

Bring the series back! Get a new writer, but bring the original cast back. Stop canceling all the great shows!

loved it – great program – really upset at just one series – Strong female character wish we cold see how life treats her from then to the prime level – whoever madcancele that decision to cancel is wrong be it the writer or Producer – be grown up mediate!

Loved it! Loved the intensity with the great music! Please, please, please do more seasons! Wonderful characters, writing, hair, make-up and clothing. I remember dressing that way myself. Thank you for this amazing series! This was so binge worthy!
Loved it! Great show. Stephanie Martini is fabulous as Tennison. Can’t believe there isn’t going to be another series.
I love mysteries and this was intelligently scripted with unique plots and twists as well as allowing a peek into the Social levels of interactions between make and female in a previously traditional male dominated profession.
Please bring it back!
I thought the show was terrific. Too bad that a conflict could ruin such a great run, and that more episodes were not produced. If it really pulled in 6 million viewers, that is no small audience. So sorry that it will not be followed with more episodes because I loved it and it left me wanting more.
Figures . They always cancel good shows and leave crap on. Shame on the writer and anyone else who cancelled it.
WHY do they cancel everything that is good? They leave garbage reality tv on and stupid shows, but cancel all the good ones. Stupidity at it’s finest. This is what TV is garbage now and they want you to be a mindless twit.
I’m sad there is just one season. Excellent show with good plots and great acting. Please find a way to bring it back. Thanks.

It did not catch my interest in the same way that Endeavor, the prequel to Inspector Morse, has. Not that the cast or stories weren’t good, but I was hoping to see Tennison in a more important job than running for tea. Yes, things were different for women in the 70s, but waiting to pick up her character as a detective would have been so much more interesting. Too bad the second book (Hidden Killers) hadn’t been written, and that one where they started. Still, sad to see they didn’t get the chance to further the storyline.
Loved series 1 and was SO looking forward to series 2. Great disappointment.
Can’t believe that another great show was canceled. Loved the show, great character’s, great plot, what’s up with canceled great programs. Would really like to understand why.
