Ray Donovan viewers have received the closure they were seeking when the Showtime drama series returned a two-hour movie. The film is a condensed version of what was planned for season eight. Showtime surprisingly cancelled Ray Donovan after seven seasons in February 2020. Star Liev Schreiber has said that the plan was to end the show with an eighth season.
[SPOILER ALERT]
The Ray Donovan film saw Ray (Schreiber) spend the film tracking his father Mickey (Voight) down before he can do more damage. The movie ends with Mickey’s death at the hand of Ray’s daughter, Bridget (Kerris Dorsey).
Will viewers see more of Ray Donovan in a future Showtime film? Schreiber said the following about the possibility of more in an interview with TV Line:
“This is the end for me. For now. But if somebody creates a new narrative and it makes sense, I don’t see why [it couldn’t continue down the road]. But there’s nothing in the works.”
However, executive producer and director David Hollander gave a more definitive answer to that question:
“Yes. For sure. This is the conclusion of the story of the series. If something different were to come up, I don’t know what would happen there. But this is the end of the story of the series.”
What do you think? Were you happy with the way the Ray Donovan movie wrapped things up for the series? Would you like to see the characters return someday?
I don’t like the way the movie ended. They can still do a lot and start the series again. Ray can not go to prison and be the fixit guy again. He still had his kids and brothers alive. They could even come back and say Mickey wasn’t really dead. It’s a show so they can do whatever they want. I love it and wish it would come back for more seasons.
We want more the movie was great I think they left a lot of doors open
I thought the movie was good, Mickey was my favorite character, so to me it is finished. what a great show, I miss it already
Ray Donovan is hands down my favorite show of all time-a repeated binger- I’m glad all the characters got a chance to return and tie up the story line with the movie but I’ll never get enough of The Donovans…I would love to see the characters return in a couple years to see where they are; in the interim I’ll start from season 1 and watch it all again! Thank you to the cast for the years of entertainment
One of the best series I have ever watched!! Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight were brilliant!! In saying that, the entire cast, especially Donavon’s brothers, also acted superbly. I was devastated when the series was cancelled! I live in Berlin, Germany and I hope I can get to see the movie here. I am so looking forward to seeing the movie!! For me, Ray Donovan could have gone on forever!!
It was good I didn’t want it to end! Yes it should come back!
I thought the movie sucked.
A final season would have been better. Too many loose ends remained for the family.
I still don’t know why it was canceled. Total ignorance
Continue it? By all means, and make the Ray Donovan character the “fixer” he once was… with Liev reprising the role!
The Ray Donovan series can definitely make a come back! The end to me left it open with a few things to start with and as someone said, you find a creative writer you can definitely keep it going for a few more seasons!! Come on Liev Schrieber, can’t get enough of Ray and the series!! Everyone is great! Would love to see more!!
The end of season 7 of Ray Donovan worked for me. He got revenge, for his sister, as I saw it. The movie made a pay day for the actors, good for them. Making it a franchise would not work without Lea and Havi his side kicks.
No dissapontment from Ray Donovan the movie it was a class act and it was great to see Ray swing that bat again. I have the entire collection so I can watch when I need a Donovan fix.
I really wish they had a proper final season to wrap it up, rather than a movie that was less than 2 hrs. And the show definitely doesn’t need Mickey to carry on, so that’s not even a factor.
But they seem resigned to the fact that it’s “over”, so probably best to leave it at that. At least they got to write their own ending, as opposed to leaving it hanging the way it was at the end of Season 7. There are 666 other shows out there that never even got that much of an opportunity.
We need some creative writers to keep this series going. It is definitely can be done.
