Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Some network genius canceled Star Trek and Deadwood too.
Should give it a chance, great cast and well written.
Why?????? thought it is a really good show
Sun records was amazing. I was never a big fan of Elvis ( I do respect the talent) but after watching Sun Records, I have developed a new respect for him. As a musician, it’s nice to learn about the roots of rock and rock. What do you expect from the 18 to 49 year olds. What do they know? They think Kanye West and Justin Beiber have talent…HAH. Please bring back Sun Records and don’t leave us hanging without finishing the story. The promotion for this show was basically non-existent. I heard about it from a friend and everyone… Read more »
Right on Drummer Mitch!!!
I’m a 45 yr old gal from Cali who so looked forward to recording this awesome show. The ratings weren’t there due to the lack In
Promotional display, and the viewing schedule. CMT should give it a second chance to go ……..
I’m very disappointed in learning that season two for Sun Records was canceled! I can only hope that you would reconsider this decision and renew SUn Records for a second season!
I’m very disappointed and hearing that season two for Sound and Records have been canceled! I found it to be very entertaining including The musical performances of these very influential R&B stars! I can only wish you were reconsider this decision and renew a second season!
How can they stop the show just before Johnny Cash gets going. Sacrilege…Obviously CMT is not really country anymore… Southern Pop Garbage. This was the one show worth anything on your channel. If it was truly a limited run then why bring in so many storylines and leave them unfinished.
Great show. Should have been renewed. Storyline followed a cool piece of history that needs to be told.
So disappointed in CMT!!! We loved Sun Records!!!
We are mad ! We love the show ! We want season 2

Please renew Sun Records. Baby boomers love the show. The 18-49 age group doesn’t know everything! The show was a hit and the characters were fantastic. Be a leader and put it back on the schedule.
