canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Supergirl: Cancel or Renew for Season Two? Move to CW?

by Trevor Kimball, March 28, 2016

Supergirl TV show on CBS: cancel or renew for season 2? CW?Last week, CBS renewed 11 TV shows for the 2016-17 season. Supergirl was not among them. With declining ratings, should the Monday night series be renewed for a second season on CBS? Should it be cancelled instead? Moved to The CW?

Supergirl revolves around Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist). As a girl, she survived Krypton’s destruction by being sent to Earth where she was raised as a human. She kept her powers a secret and now, as an adult, works as an assistant at a big city media conglomerate. Kara’s existence becomes known to the world and she is enlisted by a super-secret agency to help protect the citizens from evil forces as Supergirl. The rest of the cast includes Calista Flockhart, Chyler Leigh, Mehcad Brooks, David Harewood, and Jeremy Jordan.

The ratings for this freshman series have not exactly been “super”. After a positive start back in October, the latest ratings are less than half of the premiere’s. It’s currently averaging a 1.73 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.9 million viewers. Last week’s episode hit a new low with a 1.29 in the demo with 6.0 million. Those are poor numbers for a CBS show.

CBS head Les Moonves recently said that he expected several of the new CBS shows to be renewed for second seasons. Still, they haven’t been renewed yet and things can change quickly in the TV industry, particularly as the network execs review pilots for next season.

Tonight’s crossover with CW’s The Flash should bring a bump in the ratings but that’s not expected to help the next week’s new installment’s numbers and there are only two more episodes in this season.

Given the ratings, Supergirl probably shouldn’t be renewed for a second season on CBS. The series could work well on The CW but that might mean that the show’s budget would have to be downsized and production moved to Vancouver, British Columbia — where Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow are produced.

What do you think? Do you think Supergirl should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Should it move to The CW or stay on CBS?

Please renew. When we were kids we had so many wholesome shows on 7 channels, now we have 300 channels and there is nothing on! Supergirl is the only show i watch with my daughters on a weekly basis, we love it and look forward to it. Thank you to the creators.

I really like the crossover. Flash did help Supergirl’s rating because every fan loves crossover. However, Supergirl isn’t the only one having the gain from this crossover. Flash’s popularity also spiked since being part of Supergirl is also giving Flash a lot of press coverage. I find it frustrating that many article failed to mention that the rating CBS considered to be “high rating” is way higher than most channels. Supergirl’s worst rating episode is 3x more viewers than a good Flash episode. THREE TIMES MORE!!! Supergirl’s good performance is only considered not so super because it’s competing with too… Read more »

I read an article on another website before this and I thought I was the only one thinking whether it would be possible to move it to the CW. I even nearly tweeted it because I thought I was so clever lol then I came here..

Supergirl suffers from “villain of the week” syndrome. The CW shows work well because the overall arc of the story theme for season is served by the villains they choose and how well they fit the arc. Supergirl is bite sized candy. CBS is far too impatient to let the show develop. It took Smallville 3 seasons to find its stride. There has been very little development of the villains and I have not been interested enough to see if this show finds an identity. In this age of Netflix and CW creating great shows with B and C level… Read more »

Supergirl is having a hard time of getting renewal because it’s in the big league like CBS. FYI, Supergirl’s worst episode is still 3x more viewers/ratings than Flash and way more than Arrow. Supergirl’s awesome rating only seem mediocre in CBS because CBS has too many hot shows and way more new pilots lining up. Flash and Arrow are golden in CW because there aren’t many shows in CW to compete with. Flash, a show that only has 1/3 of the worst episode of Supergirl is golden in CW. I’m sure you get the picture of how high the goal… Read more »

I don’t think CW has the money to do the effects needed for Supergirl. If Supergirl were on the CW it would mostly be scenes with Kara and Cat talking at Catco and maybe 10 seconds of flying.

You are right. It’s a well known thing in industry that CW is cheap on production budget. Both Flash and Arrow have to be done in Canada to cut the cost. The research showed if CW took on the show, Supergirl won’t be able to have as many CG and visual effects and probably will need to cut down a lot of episodes.

In an age of dramatic, almost exhausting, scripts,,,,Supergirl is a breath of fresh air…a show I can sit down and watch with my children and not have to worry about explaining sexual inuendos…it is the fantasy version of NCIS with some humor, some good old American give it to the bad guys, and “warm fuzzys sprinkled throughout….keep it and give it time to develop its following….it has great potential.

If cbs wont renew it, give it to CW! We already saw that there is great chemistry with Benoist and Gustin on screen and I think the episode really worked well. Its a good show and deserves another season. Think of the possibilities of more crossovers alone. We already saw with Constantine on Arrow that it was super cool and it worked. Like I said, if cbs wont renew it, give it up to CW and lets keep one more positive show on; its tv’s chance to have a golden age of superheros that shines a positive light on this… Read more »

I think Supergirl is a great show, I think it should definitely be renewed but not make every show have to deal with Aliens! How about foiling some crimes conducted by real criminals! I really believe the show is well done and has great potential! I was a Gotham watcher and got a bit tired of the criminal element each week! I wanted to see that show leading to Batman years later! When Supergirl came along, I haven’t stopped watching it! I think it’s awesome and I believe in it!

Finally, a show in a timeslot that we can actually watch as a family and CBS is not renewing it. Such a sad reflection of our current society.
