Today, ABC airs the final episode of their daytime series, The Chew. Last month, the network announced that the cooking-themed talk show had been cancelled after more than 1,400 episodes. Will you miss it? Was this the right decision?
Launching in September 2011, The Chew replaced the All My Children soap opera after its 41 years on the network. A talk show that incorporates cooking and lifestyle-related segments, the series was initially hosted by Mario Batali, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly, Daphne Oz, and Michael Symon. Oz departed the show after six seasons and Batali left following sexual misconduct allegations in December 2017.
ABC decided to cancel The Chew in order to expand their Good Morning America series to three hours. NBC’s Today show has had a third hour (with various titles) since October 2000. The current incarnation is Megyn Kelly Today.
While the third hour of Today typically followed the regular program’s two-hour broadcast, hour three of Good Morning America will air separately, in the afternoon. The new hour of GMA is expected to be taped and not presented live, as the regular program is. ABC is making this move as Today has been taking the lead in various demographics in the morning ratings race.
If ABC had wanted to expand GMA to three hours, couldn’t they have replaced either The View or Live with Kelley and Ryan? That was unlikely to happen since both perform better in the ratings than The Chew. In particular, The View has been growing its audience and has been seeing its best ratings since the 2014-15 season (a rarity in today’s landscape). Meanwhile, The Chew has been in last place, ranking 13th out of 13 daytime series.
While ABC may have high hopes for a third hour of GMA, they no doubt have an uphill battle ahead. Daytime audiences often don’t like change and some viewers still hold a grudge against The Chew for replacing All My Children. Time will tell if the new hour of GMA will fare any better than The Chew did.
What do you think? Do you think that ABC should have cancelled The Chew TV series? If not, what could they have done to boost the ratings? Will you check out a third hour of Good Morning America?
I wish you would rethink this. I do not think your polls were accurate. Most of my friends watched the Chew and people would even get together to watch. It has won an award and was quality programming. It has even improved with the three hosts. An awful lot of people are disappointed and will not watch another hour of the morning show.
Please reconsider The Chew! It is a delightful show . I love the Trio of hosts left on the show. They have great chemistry between them . It is very pleasurable to watch them be silly while entertaining us with their skills. A show worth saving .. they cover so many topics that are very informative . Tired of nothing worthwhile watching in the mid- dattime lineup.
SHOULD NOT BE CANCELLED . this show rocks ever since MB got thrown off. it became a fun and enjoyable show be a shame for another not to pick it up. its not the same old talk show its not RR or the the view or the talk or the same old BS thats on. these 3 have a great time they genuinely seem to get a long on screen and off u can feel the energy they bring
Yes cancel it!!
I don’t watch, but in my opinion there is absolutely no reason why the show should have been canceled. There are three other chefs who are more than qualified, as well as entertaining to carry the show -it is Mario who should have been canceled rather than have others suffer his misdeeds.
Absolutely NOT interested in a continuation of GMA. “The Chew” is fresh and exciting. The cast has incredible charisma and actually appeared to enjoy, and respect, each other. If ABC cannot figure out that we are an intelligent daytime audience, then I suppose I’ll begin using this time to watch my DVR’d shows ….or, clean toilets – a better alternative to another repeat hour of GMA.
Please bring back The Chew. The world does not need another hour of news. The Chew is a very informative show plus they made me laugh everyday. We need more laughter not news.
Absolutely AGREE!! Bring it back…it was the only show besides Ellen, that added positivity and smiles to my day!!
Totally agree! So tired of all the negativity! It was nice having people laugh and enjoy being there instead of screaming and insulting everyone (i.e The View)!
NO! NO! NO!
I hate to see The Chew go. It is positive, funny and informative…truly one of a kind. As for GMA, I rarely watch. It is a little on the silly side for me, although I do like some of the hosts. The View, I never watch, too much negativity put forth by hosts I don’t really respect.
So stupid to expand GMA for more news and gossip. Just what we need…NOT. The Chew was feel good fun television. Informative and creative. Always up beat. Big mistake cancelling it. Only reason I had left to watch ABC. Now, no reason to flip to ABC.
I love the Chew.Great cast.Great cooking..How could you cancel such a great show???
This was a GREAT and fun show- always put you in a good mood. VERY DISSAPPOINTED_ will not watch it’s replacement
Sorry to see that news programming (especially videotaped news) will be replacing a fun and informative show like The Chew. TV needs upbeat shows like this and it has been a pleasure to witness the comraderie among Michael, Carla and Clinton. I think it is a big mistake to have canceled it.
This is a great show!!!
In my opinion ABC is making a bad mistake in cancelling The Chew. As much as a news junky and avid watcher of GMA as I am (since its beginning) I will not watch the extra hour. I can’t tell you the importance of The Chew a fun, loving, friendly, teaching show which none other compares to. I watch mostly ABC but I may be changing. You may be surprised as to how many viewers you will be losing across the board. I’ve always rooted for ABC but you are a huge disappointment to me. I got over Last Man Standing,… Read more »
