Today, ABC airs the final episode of their daytime series, The Chew. Last month, the network announced that the cooking-themed talk show had been cancelled after more than 1,400 episodes. Will you miss it? Was this the right decision?
Launching in September 2011, The Chew replaced the All My Children soap opera after its 41 years on the network. A talk show that incorporates cooking and lifestyle-related segments, the series was initially hosted by Mario Batali, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly, Daphne Oz, and Michael Symon. Oz departed the show after six seasons and Batali left following sexual misconduct allegations in December 2017.
ABC decided to cancel The Chew in order to expand their Good Morning America series to three hours. NBC’s Today show has had a third hour (with various titles) since October 2000. The current incarnation is Megyn Kelly Today.
While the third hour of Today typically followed the regular program’s two-hour broadcast, hour three of Good Morning America will air separately, in the afternoon. The new hour of GMA is expected to be taped and not presented live, as the regular program is. ABC is making this move as Today has been taking the lead in various demographics in the morning ratings race.
If ABC had wanted to expand GMA to three hours, couldn’t they have replaced either The View or Live with Kelley and Ryan? That was unlikely to happen since both perform better in the ratings than The Chew. In particular, The View has been growing its audience and has been seeing its best ratings since the 2014-15 season (a rarity in today’s landscape). Meanwhile, The Chew has been in last place, ranking 13th out of 13 daytime series.
While ABC may have high hopes for a third hour of GMA, they no doubt have an uphill battle ahead. Daytime audiences often don’t like change and some viewers still hold a grudge against The Chew for replacing All My Children. Time will tell if the new hour of GMA will fare any better than The Chew did.
What do you think? Do you think that ABC should have cancelled The Chew TV series? If not, what could they have done to boost the ratings? Will you check out a third hour of Good Morning America?
All My Children 41 years plus an online reboot. Amazed the Poo lasted as long as it did
I love the show and look forward to watching it everyday. I am so disheartened that is being cancelled. In these days and time we need light hearted humor and fun and interesting show hosts that keep politics out of the conversations. Please don’t cancel this show to watch more of GMA. If you want to cancel anything, how about The View?
spare me – another hour of phony laughter and “trying to act” Good Morning America. it is no longer a good news show, but more about “what’s happening with celebrities. count me out on watching it! I did love the Chew & am sad it is no longer going to be.
The Chew,The View, The Real, The Ellen. The WTF, etc etc. All these shows have loud mouth hollyweird so called stars spouting their bias opinions.
Do you mean biased?
YES! ABC did everyone a huge favor when they canceled “The Chew”. When the series debuted, I had high hopes, Clinton Kelly has long been one of my favorites…”What NOT to Wear”. The Chew put him in a ridiculous and oh, so boring light. He never looked like he was enjoying himself. I watched about 6 or 8 episodes and never returned.
the CHEW is a very uplifting show, it is easy to see that they enjoy working with each other. there is no backbiting or complaining, who needs another hour of GMA? HUGE mistake ABC!
My favorite daytime show. SO sad it was canceled. Will miss is it every day. My family will miss the great recipes I learned from watching. Don’t need more GMA.
Did you people read the article? It clearly states it was 13th out 13 shows, LAST PLACE! I for one found the show absurd, it had a game show context.
Disney really you cancel a great show the chew for more GMA and yet you keep the View? The view is vile , loud doesn’t seem to fit the Disney image. The chew, funny and informational.
Again I see it does not matter what the audience feels about a program. It is the Powers-that-be that sit somewhere totally out of touch with the “lowly tv watchers” who enjoy programs such as The Chew. These people live in another world from so many of us who just like a show that brings information in an entertaining way. Each day I enjoyed the camaraderie among the hosts, the ease with which they would prepare food, as well as introducing new foods to their audience. I often found myself smiling as they bantered back and forth. There are SOOOO… Read more »
But they are listening to the audience. It was dead last in the ratings. 13th out 13. Just because you and two other people were watching don’t garner a hit.
Glad to hear it is going off the air. Carla is too loud and her voice is nerve wracking. Michael has the most stupidous laugh I have ever heard. He is obnoxious. Clinton Kelly acts ridiculously silly. Good ridence. They all (3) changed when the others left. Now they act like jerks, are loud and obnoxious.
I too will NOT be watching the replacement. I looked forward to The Chew everyday!!!!!!!
Hopefully they can start anew on another show.
The Chew is a delightful show! Personally, I think it has been much better without Mario. Please reconsider!
I agree! I mostly tuned out when Mario was on, annoyingly pretentious. I was so happy when it was whittled down to my 3 favorites – Clinton, Carla & Michael – which was just perfect, with guest stars added to the mix. I will not be watching the 3rd hour of GMA, or is that GAA?
I WILL NOT BE WATCHING THE EXPANSION OF GOOD MORNING AMERICA!
I disagree with the Cancellation of The Chew!
I will continue to watch TODAY ON NBC it is an excellent show with programming more catered to my interests and marurity!
I think The Chew had run its course. I never liked their little skits with very bad acting. The episode that they announced that they were being dropped was very uncomfortable. Clinton getting drunk, or acting like it, was not funny. They kept saying they needed a job, and thought that was funny, it wasn’t, just uncomfortable. I do wish them all the best.
#savethechew
Loved the chew!! I think all three of the hosts are wonderful – however if I had to pick my fav it would be Clinton
The Chew was great I vote to keep it on the air!!! Lang Tondre
