canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

The Gong Show: Season One Ratings

Published: January 8, 2018

The Gong Show TV Show on ABC: Season 1 Ratings (Canceled or Season 2?)

In the last couple of years, ABC has made a major effort to add reboots of unscripted series like $100,000 Pyramid, Celebrity Family Feud, To Tell the Truth, and Match Game to its primetime lineup. Now, the Alphabet Network has brought back another oldie but goodie, The Gong Show. The ABC TV series is an updated version of the Chuck Barris 1970s and ’80s NBC and syndicated classic. Can lightning strike twice? Will The Gong Show be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. **Update below.

Airing on the ABC television network, The Gong Show is a wacky amateur talent competition, hosted by “British comedic legend Tommy Maitland” (Mike Myers). Celebrity judges include Will Arnett, Ken Jeong, Zach Galifianakis, Alison Brie, Andy Samberg, Elizabeth Banks, Joel McHale, Dana Carvey, Will Forte, Jack Black, and Anthony Anderson. Performers with unique talents face off in hopes of impressing a rotating panel of three celebrity judges. When a judge determines an act does not deserve a score, he or she can grab the mallet, strike the gong, and eliminate the contestant, provided fellow judges don’t prevent that from happening. When an act pleases the judges, they allow the performer(s) to complete it, at which time the judges will award between 0 and 10 points. At the end of each episode, the performer or act with the highest score wins The Gong Show trophy and a check for $2,000.17.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.

9/8 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.

Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.

Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.

How are your shows doing in the ratings? Check the current rankings:
A&E | ABC | AMC | Bravo | CBS | CMT | The CW | FOX | Freeform | FX | FXX
Hallmark | HBO | History | MTV | NBC | OWN | Showtime | Starz | Syfy | TBS
TNT | TV Land | USA Network | WGN America

What do you think? Do you like The Gong Show TV series on ABC? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?

**1/8 update: ABC has renewed The Gong Show for season two. Details here.

The original “Gong Show” involved wacky-but-clever acts and judges who worked well together. It was a genuine contest with surprised winners and a clever host (Chuck Barris) who had a producer’s cleverness and wit. The new version, unfortunately, clearly is contrived. There are contestant interactions with the judges which suggest some contestants are shills and winners are predetermined. Changing judges each week is unfortunate, because the panel never really is able to play off one another. Several don’t even seem to understand the scoring. Mike Myers overplays his role and lacks Chuck Barris’ cleverness. Please CANCEL the current version.

Simple. The original was a classic. If the old episodes were to rerun today they would score higher ratings. Appreciate the attempt but you just can’t remake a classic. Chucky any was the man. Sorry Mike you are talented but you are just trying to hard. Chuck was naturally amazed by his acts. Oh how hard I wanted to love the remake but now I wish it would go away

Please bring back this show! Its one of my all time favorites! Very silly, very fun, and actually even a bit of skill here and there. If it was up to me, it would be on year round! I DVR them and watch them over and over!

Easily the best talent show on TV!

The biggest problem with this show is that some of the guest judges can’t get into the silly of it. The old shows judges added to the show. Some judges seem bored and distract from the funzies of the show. No one wrestling with the gong like on the old days. The former gong show judges got the audience into it. To be a guest judge – you have to leave the idea that your intellectually superior at the door and get into the fun of it.

Why is it on so late??? Kids/teens would like it as I did back when. It’s ok, but judges need to be better at scoring and Gonging.

I hope the show is cancelled. It is ridiculously corny and not even entertaining enough to keep me awake.

I think the show is great. It a great show for the summer, and better than Steve Harvey’s show. At lest when you watch the gong show you know what your getting. Even Mike has created a funny character that adds another act to the show.

I’m hoping the gong show remake gets cancelled in after a couple of episodes verity shows aren’t that popular or last that long the acts are like the rejects that couldn’t make it on Americas got talent. From the first episode I think the jump rope guy should of won not the banana spitting couple some of the other acts where just creepy like the tarantula woman putting it in her mouth where did they find these people I will only the show one more time.
Plz cancel this show

Who is that host? I loved Chuckie on the original. I’ll watch again just out of curiosity, hope it improves. The winners act was gross.

The show is precision comedy. Mike Myers is a comic genius. The acts are just like the 70’s and the judges are amazing. I feel this is one of those shows that will take a long time to climb to the very top. If ABC holds onto it, they will eventually have a really BIG winner. Still talking to people that just don’t know it’s on and never heard of it, but after I make them watch it, they LOVE it.

Please renew! and bring back the unnamed comic, ie the comic with the paper bag over his head, but have them as a guest comic per show. Would be a lot of fun, I enjoy the show bc its just fun hearted and ridiculous
