canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Instinct: Cancelled by CBS; No Season Three for Alan Cumming TV Show (Reactions)

by Trevor Kimball, August 17, 2019

Instinct TV show on CBS: canceled, no season 3 for 2020It will soon be “case closed” permanently for the Instinct TV show on CBS. The network has cancelled the Sunday night series so there won’t be a third season for Reinart and Needham.

A crime thriller, based on the James Patterson novel, Murder Games, Instinct stars Alan Cumming, Bojana Novakovic, Daniel Ings, Naveen Andrews, and Sharon Leal. The drama centers on Dr. Dylan Reinhart (Cumming), a former CIA operative who is lured out of his peaceful retirement as a university professor and author, to help NYPD detective Lizzie Needham (Novakovic) catch a serial killer. Dylan’s old CIA colleague, Julian Cousins (Andrews), lends a hand, along with Lizzie’s C.O., Lt. Jasmine Gooden (Leal). Season two kicked off with Dylan reinstated as NYPD consultant, where he can both impress and irritate Lizzie. Meanwhile, Dylan’s husband, Andy (Ings), pursues adoption as a way for the couple to finally become parents.

Airing on Sunday nights, the second season of Instinct is currently averaging a 0.31 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.39 million viewers. Compared to season one, that’s down by 50% and 49%, respectively. Instinct is nearly the lowest-rated TV shows of the summer CBS TV shows.

A pair of Instinct episodes will air tomorrow night on CBS and the series finale will run next Sunday, August 25th.

Series creator Michael Rauch revealed the show’s cancellation and Cumming and Novak shared their thoughts.

I’m very sad to relay the news that @instinctcbs won’t be renewed for a third season. We will be doubling up this Sunday and our season 2 (and series) finale will air Sunday August 25th. Endless thanks to @Alan cummingsnaps @bojnovak for making Dylan and Lizzie more everything than I could have ever hoped. And thank you to our incredible crew, cast, writers, producers and everyone who helped make our show, and to do it with respect and kindness. And an especially giant thank you to our diehard fans for your love, loyalty and excellent taste. (Is it too soon so ask for a reboot?)

So the word is out. @instinctcbs will not be returning for a third season. Almost exactly three years ago I was sent a galley copy of a book by @jamespattersonbooks and @howardroughan and then I met the show runner @mbr34 who was to adapt it for TV and I jumped in. And I’m still in, for two more episodes tomorrow and the last one ever next Sunday. And while I’m sorry I won’t be getting to play with @bojnovak and the rest of the amazing cast and crew again, I’m grateful for two seasons of fun and gore and feeling like a dandy thanks to @danlawsonstyle’s costumes, and selfies with corpses and vegan options at catering and Lala’s occasional guest appearances in the police station when she got bored in her basket beneath my desk. I’m also proud to have played the first ever leading character in a US network drama who is gay. Yes, really. Because of @instinctcbs millions of people will have seen a same sex marriage portrayed for the first time and I hope we changed and opened some minds in the process.

WELL THIS SUCKS BALLS. But when one door closes another… actually fuck that. This sucks balls. Love to all our fans and the most incredible cast and crew. Thank you all for an incredible two years. @Michael_Rauch @Alancumming @CBSTweet @CBSTVStudios @TVdub https://t.co/80QDAJvbTy

I adored the premise. Yes, I would’ve watched a season 3, 4, 5… Seems every intelligent program gets cancelled, yet gore, ignorant and car-chasing shows run on and on. Sad commentary of our viewing public.

This is insane. This show must be renewed. The actors are great and the plot lines are very interesting. Take off all the garbage reality shows and leave this show on. I’m fed up with the stupid decisions that management makes.Wake up! and bring back “Instinct”

I loved the show. I don’t watch much on CBS because they play to a younger audience. Instinct was tastefully an fine example of an alternate lifestyle without being in your face with it. I guess I’ll go back to watching other channels on Sunday night. I loved the detective procedurals. I definitely would have watched another season. You lose this viewer.
