Roseanne: Spin-off Decision Coming Soon, Depends on Barr Giving Up Her Fee

by Jessica Pena, June 18, 2018

Roseanne TV show on ABC: season 10 (canceled or renewed?)

(ABC / Adam Rose)

Is Roseanne getting a spin-off or not? According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC is currently in negotiations with stars of the cancelled TV show.

As reported earlier, ABC cancelled the sitcom revival after star/creator Roseanne Barr posted offensive statements on Twitter. The series has already been renewed for a second season with returning cast members Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman, Alicia Goranson, Emma Kenny, and Sarah Chalke.

Now, THR says ABC is nearing a deal for a Roseanne spin-off that centers on Sara Gilbert’s character, Darlene. Fellow co-stars Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman are “tentatively on board” to join the project. However, the decision ultimately rests on Barr.

In order for the spin-off to continue, the former star/creator has to waive her rights to a considerable fee. As of reporting, it’s unclear what Barr has agreed to or not.

What do you think? Did you watch the Roseanne reboot? Would you watch the spin-off?

I don’t think she should give up her fee…not even part of it. I think the network was too quick to make an example of her when they removed her and cancel the show. It is her show and the network is wrong to try and profit off her work and not compensate her for the contract they agreed on from the beginning.

I believe she should not give up her rights to her show. They wanted to get her off the air, they did. She could have just been fired and then negotiated the future rights fees to her, to keep the show going without her. There is no reason for the network to make a profit off her character if she does not get compensated also. If she were to reduce her take, that’s up to her to decide. Personally I do not agree with her firing. The statement was not as bad as some want to make of it. If… Read more »

Its funny how ABC might think people want to get excited for a show starring Sara Gilbert.. sorry but I would rather watch paint dry.

“She is not a racist” “You can’t say anything without being called a racist” “Other shows say nasty things” Roseanne’s tweet was very racist and it wasn’t her first one. Only privileged whites don’t think what she did was wrong. ABC did the right thing and if they do make a spin-off without her, I will definitely watch it.

Do not give in. Rosanne needs to hold her ground and force ABC’s hand. The double standard they used needs to cost them.

I will not watch it and it appears that everybody wants to get rid of Roseanne its all about the money I have enjoyed the original and I want them to pull together as a family as a real family is kind of disfunctunal I have heard worse in my family and a lot of the talk shows I have heard a lot of them saying really nasty things about Roseanne and I mean nasty it is a nasty generation and it appears the original cast I don’t know wants her gone well I am not going to watch it

It’s going to be a disaster centered around Sara Gilbert’s character, Darlene. Shes a has-been. Not that great of an actress. I will not watch it.

I read that Barr is negotiating to receive some type of fee and will waive any rights to the spin off. I think it’s the least she can do since her racist comments caused her cast mates to lose their jobs. The show will be better without her. I hope they kill off her character and that Dan finds a good woman this time.

I think what she said was mean, but doesn’t she have the right to her opinion. Do you watch the show blackish? I use love that show but I stop, watching because I felt like they have said many mean about people that makes them maybe come off like there racists.

I’d definitely still watch it. I think it would be more benefital to center the focus around a different character with like different themes. Ultimately it’s the creator’s decision, but i’d still go for spinoff

A few days after “Roseanne” was dropped, I blocked all ABC, HULU, and LAFF channels from the TVs in my house. I’m finding that I don’t miss any of the other shows on those channels at all… Evidently I only really liked “Roseanne” on those channels anyway. So, I won’t even know when they launch the new show. However, I still can watch all 10 seasons of the real Roseanne on Amazon everyday. She still makes me smile, and lightens my day. ABC may try to obliterate the person from our memory– but Roseanne’s DVD’s will live on. Bravo to… Read more »

The whole thing is ridiculous. The tweet or whatever you call it was taken out of context. Barr is not a racist, she’s a bit of mean individual at times, but its not a crime. ABC wasn’t being a hero when they prematurely canceled Roseann, they were being cowards. They panicked when they thought of all those nice rich sponsors. Even a number of African American celebs have come forward and said they don’t believe Roseanne is racist. I watched Roseanne for the dynamics of the characters at the center of which is Roseanne. So no I wouldn’t watch a… Read more »

I might watch the spin off it won’t be the same without ROSEANNE. And I’m not sure if I’d give up the fee if I was her, She’s earned it & I’m sure they’ll be making money from her name.
