Last year, the MacGyver TV show dropped significantly in the ratings, particularly in the demo, where its rank slipped to 19th out of the 26 scripted CBS TV series we tracked. While that weaker performance might see many shows cancelled, the CBS audience skews older and in terms of total viewership, it ranked 11th. Now that it is back for a third season, can it regain its lost viewers, or even attract new ones? Will MacGyver be cancelled or renewed for season four? Stay tuned.
A CBS action-adventure series, MacGyver stars Lucas Till, George Eads, Tristin Mays, Justin Hires, and Meredith Eaton. The reimagined drama centers on Angus “Mac” MacGyver (Till), a 20-something adventurer. Mac creates a secret organization within the US government. There, he uses his vast scientific knowledge and extraordinary talent for unconventional problem solving to save the world.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
