What’s This TV Show About?
Streaming on the Netflix paid subscription platform, The Last Kingdom stars Alexander Dreymon, David Dawson, Emily Cox, Ian Hart, Tobias Santelmann, Thure Lindhardt, Millie Brady, Alexandre Willaume, Julia Bache-Wiig, Joseph Millson, and Peter McDonald. An adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s novel series, The Saxon Stories, the historical drama follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Dreymon), the son of a 9th Century Saxon nobleman. After killing his father, Danish invaders kidnap the boy and he is raised by their warlord, Ragnar. Years later, when Ragnar is killed, Uhtred vows to avenge him, even as he returns to Bebbanburg to claim his birthright.
Telly’s Take
Unless Netflix decides to release streaming “ratings” it is always difficult to gauge the success of streaming TV shows, like The Last Kingdom. So, let’s look at what we do know. Netflix became a co-producer after the first season ran on BBC Two in UK and BBC America in the US. And in the US, the second season will have its first run on Netflix, leaving BBC America out of the picture. They must have some faith in the project. Provided the show continues to do well in both the UK and in the international markets that get the series via Netflix, I suspect The Last Kingdom will be renewed for season three. 9/26/17 update: Though a season three renewal hasn’t been announced, there have been reports of season three casting and filming.

Love this show. Don’t cancel.
They have been filming season 3 all of last fall/winter and it is supposed to begin airing this fall/winter. The writer, directors, and editor all have season 3 listed as their current project on their CVs, and the author has said that it appears season 3 will begin to air toward the end of the year. I’m not sure why Netflix hasn’t made it public, but I doubt they’d be filming then not air season 3.
I couldn’t wait for season 3 so I went ahead and read the books. OMG!! They are GREAT books. They didn’t slow down and get boring like GOT eventually did.
Maybe since Netflix signed on they will pump more money and give us more from the books. I found the battle scenes to be smaller and not as intense vs what I read on books. The battle scenes from the books are Bernard’s claim to fame.
I’m not sure what the hang up is with getting this series renewed. In 3.5 years, we’ve seen only two seasons, and now we’re left hanging as to the status of the 3rd season. In the meantime, other shows are being put out a season per year. I’ve read some information that indicates the BBC doesn’t like expensive series, which TLK is, to make so they’re slow to decide their fate. Bout tired of finding something isn’t finished once I start watching it. This was a bad ass show let me find out it isn’t I will be done with Netflix all together. How that’s for rating
