Starz was very happy with the early reception of their new Outlander TV show so they gave it an early season two renewal. The cable channel has often given quick renewals but the series are then often cancelled after two seasons. Will Starz regret giving Outlander a second year order so soon? Would it have been cancelled if they had waited?
The Outlander series revolves around Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945. She finds herself mysteriously thrown back in time, to 1743 Scotland, and forced to marry another man to save her life. A passionate affair is ignited. The rest of the cast includes Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Annette Badland, Stephen Walters, Laura Donnelly, Lotte Verbeek, James Fleet, Duncan Lacroix, Roderick Gilkison, Simon Callow, Grant O’Rourke, Bill Paterson, and Simon Meacock.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
1/29 update: Have you heard that season two has been cancelled? Well, it hasn’t.
Final season averages: 0.26 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.04 million total viewers.

What do you think? Do you like the Outlander TV show? Do you think it should have been renewed for a second season or cancelled instead?
PLEASE keep the show! I love it! It’s not really like anything else on television.
I am so in LOVE with this show!!! I had never read the books, but decided to because of the show. I just finished Voyager and can’t wait to read Drums of Autumn!! I hope and pray that STARZ continues this series beyond 2 seasons. Best show on TV!!!
I have loved all of Gabaldon’s books, and while Jaime leaves a teensy bit to be desired to the original character, I truly hope the series will continue.
I havent read the books, so have no expectations and I am thoroughly enjoying these 2 new fresh faces actors in the lead roles. Curious though as to why you say TV Jamie leaves a lot to be desired vs the book Jamie. Is he much different in the book?
I’ve read all of the books, just finished no. 8 and eagerly anticipating no. 9, which Gabaldon just signed. I found Sam Heughan to be a perfect Jamie, not sure how they could have cast it any better.
Yes I agree with the casting very GOOD!!! Love this show but dont like waiting until April Im rerunning the show Ive tapped each one I will have them worn out by April also reading the books on 5 now !! Hurry april love this show shall I say it again love Outlander
Amazed at how well the series was done. All the characters are just as in the book, and it follows the books we all loved so much. I subscribed to Starz so I could see this. Definitely keep it. I miss it already.
I am totally blown away. I have read all the books twice. I also have watched each episode more then once. The story as presented gives all a working knowledge of the characters. The actors come across as I imagined them to be from the book. I couldn’t ask for a better presentation. I do hope this series will keep going. To even think of dropping it would totally disappoint a lot of fans.
Am a huge fab of Dianna’s books. Although the series is definitely different from the book – I like the way it has played out. It is still true to the novel. I think the actresses and actors were chosen well for the characters they are playing. I am hooked.
I love this show just like I loved the books!Idefinitely want a second season & more
To say I love this show is an understatement (I have to wonder, is there a way to measure the In Demand/Repeats of the shows? They have to be high). The thing that few have mentioned is the way the two leading characters were cast – they chose relatively unknown actors in their 30s, not “kids” who might be the flavor of the year. As readers know, the first two books span four years, but the next books span 20 years, which means these actors can age more appropriately and be much more believable.
Yes u can measure the on demand to a certain extent. Its harder for premium channels like Starz HBO etc as they don’t air commercials and Nielsen counts the on demand if it has the same commercials in the original airing. But Starz can get access to those numbers through their own resources and the cable providers they are available on like Time Warner Cable. And yes those numbers are probably big. I think these days most people view the original cable series on demand or “binge viewing’ so they can watch a few episodes at a time. That’s how… Read more »
Big fan of the Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series! I am absolutely loving the Starz series! The adaption is wonderful-great job Ronald Moore ! I just hope all involved with producing the series knows they are doing a fantastic and entertaining job!!! As other comments suggest, I also subscribed to Starz for Outlander. Glad I did!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SHOW. THE WHOLE THING IS WELL DONE, GREAT ACTORS, LOVE THE HIGHLANDER COUNTRYSIDE. STORY LINE IS EXCELENT AND VERY WELL DIRECTED.
I HAVE NOT READ THE BOOKS BUT I WILL NOW. PLEASE, PLEASE KEEP THIS SHOW GOING FOR SOME TIME. IT IS ONE OF THE BEST ONES IN SOME TIME. CAN’T WAIT TIL IT RETURNS IN APRIL.
I loved the books and I love the series. I don’t care if they change little things here and there from the books as long as the story of Jamie and Claire’s journey continues being true to their characters 🙂 Wonderful acting, great characters, beautiful scenery… just a wonderful series all around. Please keep this around for seasons to come! Something worth watching on TV.
its usually a good sign when a show’s ratings increase over the run, and it looks like this show did. but to see if it really is a successful series for starz, you need to compare it to the ratings of the other starz original series. if these numbers are considerably bigger than other stars series and the good ratings continue, than it would be deemed a success for starz.
I haven’t read the books, am now going to……I love, love, love this series, as does my husband! Please go forever!!
LOVE this show!
I love the series. This is the only reason I subscribed to Stars. I’ve read all of the books and was delighted to see it as a series. The characters in the series bring the books alive. Hopefully, since they have plenty of material to work with. The series can continue for many seasons.
Congrats to the writers and actors. You are doing great!
Long time reader of all DG’s books. Love the adaptation. I also subscribed to Starz to watch this show!
