Shiny! Gina Torres has been cast in the title role of The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez TV series pilot at ABC. Torres is famous around these here parts for being a big, damn hero on Firefly, which was cancelled by FOX after 14 episodes (11 aired), in December 2002.

The cast of The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez also includes: Raul Castillo, Alison Fernandez, Zabryna Guevara, Marta Milans, Christian Ochoa, and Christina Pickles. Devious Maids‘ Charise Castro Smith is writing and will executive produce with Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, of Marvel’s Agent Carter and the cancelled Resurrection TV series.

A drama, The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez is an immigrant’s rags to riches story. The ambition that got this Miami entrepreneur where she is today, also threatens to ruin her family. Valdez is haunted by her past and driven by the desire to wreak vengeance on a treacherous lover. The series is said to be, “Macbeth with a Cuban twist.”

Torres’ Eva is further described as a strong-willed Cuban lioness who came to the U.S. with the clothes on her back, and has since built a mini-empire of beauty salons, cafes and even a successful law firm. “A modern-day Havana-born Cleopatra” who rules her businesses — and her two adult sons — with an iron hand, Eva Sofia is hurt and humiliated when a local Miami blue blood, the man who loved then abandoned her years ago, publicly spurns her. Intent on vengeance, Eva Sofia is offered help from three mysterious women of supernatural origin who exploit her outrage to their own ends. But once in their power, Eva Sofia may find it hard to resist their evil — and ultimately deadly — influence.

Torres plays Jessica Pearson on USA Network‘s Suits, which aired its season five finale last week, and has already been renewed for a sixth season. According to THR, Torres’ role in the pilot “is in second position” to her Suits commitment.
