Kim Todd, the president of Canada-based Original Pictures, has confirmed that the youth drama Falcon Beach has been cancelled after two seasons. The series airs on ABC Family in the U.S. and Global in Canada.
The cancellation comes as a result of ABC Family’s decision to pass on a third season of Beach. Without the financial support of the cable channel, continued production isn’t possible. Todd says that Global offered to pick it up for a third season but at a significantly lower cost than before.
Strangely enough, Beach is being cancelled despite being quite popular. The show’s audience is made up of predominantly 12 to 17 year old girls. Unfortunately, the series failed to attract many outside of that age group and ABC Family wanted a broader demographic; i.e. 18 to 49 viewers.
The cancellation wasn’t a shocker to Todd who said, “You’re never surprised by what happens in series television, because the winds of change blow quickly and forcefully.” That doesn’t make the end result any easier, personally or professionally. Todd lamented, “So nothing is surprising, but it’s still extremely disappointing. In order to produce a television series, you have to invest so much of yourself into the process… And now we have to tell the cast and crew, and that’s disappointing, too, because we’re not the only ones who put their blood and sweat into this.”
Many citizens of the shoreside Lake Winnipeg town will miss Beach as well because it provided great exposure for the town and attracted visitors — from as far away as Japan. The town’s local mayor and restaurant owner Daryl Carry was told of the cancellation on Friday and said, “We’ve had tourists here every summer, coming to see where Falcon Beach is shot… But I guess at the end of the day, it didn’t add up. The money offered isn’t enough. They had to make a decision to pull the plug.”
The second and final season has already aired on Global in Canada. In the U.S., Falcon Beach began airing on ABC Family on April 9th and is expected to conclude on July 2nd. No plans have been released to tie up any ongoing storylines. Stay tuned!
This is insane. I am 25 years old and I tivo the show every week. DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW.
I’m 35 years young and I LOVE this show. Why would you cancel it? This is so disappointing! Let Soapnet pick it up. They already show reruns on there of it. Don’t let this show die.
Omg please!!! dont cancle it this show is a great show and many people like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please rethink about canceling it!11
Please do not cancel this show. I am 35 years old and love the show. I too watched it faithfully last year. I agree that ABC Family put it at a different time slot this year and it has been hard to catch it on, but thank goodness for SOAP net who ran the show again on Saturday’s. Why not cance Kyle XY and leave the good shows on the air. This show is the only show I really watch on ABC Family (besides some of the movies)and now they are cancelling, what a waste of another channel.
R U kidding me!!! They cancel the OC and now this. I’m 35+ and loved both these shows. How do you air a show at 7 pm and then move it to a Midnight slot and expect to retain any viewers. If you want adults, air it a 8 or 9pm.
Kris
I AM 26 AND I WATCH FALCON BEACH EVERY WEEK I HAVE NEVER MISSED ONE SHOW, THSI IS THE BEST SHOW THAT ABC-FAMILY HAS GOT AND I REALLY HOPE THEY FIND A WAY TO KEEP IT RUNNING, TRY FINDING A NEW CHANNEL OR WHAT EVRY JUST KEEP IT ON,
IT REALLY MAKES ME MAD THAT ALL THE GOOD SHOWS GET CANCELLED, THIS SHOW IS SO GOOD IT COULD HAVE BEEN AS BIG AS 90210,
I am 37 and love Falcon Beach. I have watched it from the first episode of Season 1. The 7PM timeslot was not the best idea since it seemed to do well in the 9PM timeslot last year why chance changing it up? However, canceling it is totally not a good idea. I do not have kids but enjoy the freshness of the show none-the-less, and you’re never too old to watch good-looking guys.
I’m 32 & I’ve loved this show since it debuted. I wasn’t sure how popular it really was. But I’ve been hooked since the first episode. I think you’re making a big mistake cancelling it now.
i love the show falcon beach
the last commet was june 16
keep commenting.
I’m 32 and i’ve watched every episode. I don’t agree with the reason for cancelling the show. I perfer Falcon beach over Kyle xy. How do you excpect to get more of an audience when you air the show so late and change the day. People think the show is still on Monday nights and when they see its not they assume its already cancelled. I think its a set up.KEEP FALCON BEACH ON THE AIR AND RUN A 3RD SEASON!!!!
I’m another 42 year young viewer of Falcon Beach and can’t believe they would cancel it over other stupid shows. I do agree that thew 7:00pm time slot was its demise. Please bring back these fine actors on something else soon?
Maybe the reason they changed the time recently is to see if it does matter what time the show airs. Ya never know. I wouldn’t count a 3rd season out totally just yet.
Don’t do this please!!! I love this show so much. I can’t believe this :'(
I agree with everyone. I’m 30 and I love watching this show. Why is it that the instead of changing time slots they just scrap a show? Try putting it on at 8pm or 9pm and then if it still doesn’t attract viewers then pull the plug? Did they think of maybe pitching the show to someone else and see if they will pick it up. Maybe if enough people contact other stations someone will get the idea and give this show another try. Another station may have that fresh view that will allow them to see the potential this… Read more »
