Starz was very happy with the early reception of their new Outlander TV show so they gave it an early season two renewal. The cable channel has often given quick renewals but the series are then often cancelled after two seasons. Will Starz regret giving Outlander a second year order so soon? Would it have been cancelled if they had waited?
The Outlander series revolves around Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945. She finds herself mysteriously thrown back in time, to 1743 Scotland, and forced to marry another man to save her life. A passionate affair is ignited. The rest of the cast includes Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Annette Badland, Stephen Walters, Laura Donnelly, Lotte Verbeek, James Fleet, Duncan Lacroix, Roderick Gilkison, Simon Callow, Grant O’Rourke, Bill Paterson, and Simon Meacock.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
1/29 update: Have you heard that season two has been cancelled? Well, it hasn’t.
Final season averages: 0.26 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.04 million total viewers.

What do you think? Do you like the Outlander TV show? Do you think it should have been renewed for a second season or cancelled instead?
I love this show so much! I hope there are many many many seasons. Thanks to the whole production including the drivers that get the actors to the set every day. Thanks to Starz & Sony for believing the books by Diana Gabaldon could be adapted to TV (that should probably be a BIG thank you to Ronald D Moore) Such a good show!
Had never heard of the books until I watched the first half of the season. After that, I became a fan. Having been in the film industry for many years, I am familiar with adaptations from books, casting, writing, production, etc. I then read all of D.Gabaldon’s novels because of the series. Although the series is not word for word or scene by scene to the the Author’s novels, it is certainly the “best” adaptation that I have seen on cable for any series. Love what the Producer’s have achieved, the casting is also brilliant, the storyline, costumes, locations, actors,… Read more »
The is by far the most watched Starz show in their history. Demos are not as important for premium pay channels as subscriptions and their subscriptions are at an all time high too. This is huge hit for Starz and a compelling and interesting adaption of a beloved series of books. Sam Heughan and Caitronia Balfe are stellar as the main characters and perfectly cast.
This is by far the best television series ever. They have taken Diana Gabaldon’s book series and with the help of Ron Moore and his most competent production team made it into the best ever television series. They have stayed with the books and historically correct using the authors well researched material. The costumes are,” off the wall” terrific. The music and scenery of Scotland make you ready to book a trip there. It is the total package and you could never improve on anything I have seen so far. I only wish they could be on every Saturday, I… Read more »
I tried watching 5 episodes. I cound not watch one more. I hope Starz will have something more compelling on in this open slot. Only a trope chick would go back in time and worry about who to fall in love with instead of thinking about time travel and how it works and what it can do for yourself or humanity by advancing technology or personal gain, etc. Yay, yah, all the burning at the stake stuff and witches. A smart person would overcome that by hanging out with someone like David Hume (same time period, open athetist, Scottish, right… Read more »
Don’t want to spoil anything, but if the story continues to follow the books, just give it time. 😉 Claire hangs out with all sorts of interesting people. Also, you have to remember that she is from 1945, so she isn’t really going into it as a modern woman to begin with. Her first instinct is to survive any way she can. In the beginning she certainly isn’t trying to fall in love with anyone or get involved with the politics of another time beyond seeking alliance with powerful people who can offer protection. I think it’s spot on for… Read more »
The best TV series ever after being an avid reader of all of Diana’s books this is the icing on a most wonderful cake.
Caitriona and Sam bring the beloved ClAire and Jamie to life they are perfect together as are all the supporting cast, great portrayals all round.
The filming is superb and the spectacular Scottish scenery is the star.
Costumes and production first class. This wonderful series MUST continue
There is no other show that can compare to Outlander. It is richly done with strong performances and writing. As a long time reader of the books, I both longed for and feared a screen adaptation. I am beyond pleased with what Starz has given us. Renew, renew, renew. Do all the books!
The best! The most mature innovative and boundary pushing series EVER! BTW where’s the 49+ demographic? We are not dead yet!
I think it is the best show and great adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s book. It keeps getting better every week. The actors are right on. Not only should they have a long second season, it should be renewed for additional seasons as well. There are eight books out there that are rich with adventure, interesting characters, and fascinating stories that surround the most romantic passionate couple that have come along in decades.
My husband and I love outlander, my parents watch it and love it to. Its a great show. I found the books and they are good they give you more details.
Nice photography, good period sets. Story is pure chick flick & only for fans of the books. Otherwise drivel that should be cancelled ASAP.
Your opinion. Lots of us disagree with you.
I just bought the DVD I only watvh the finiest of series and this is one
I LOVE OUTLANDER ! The rating should be up there with Downton Abbey
Please I have the 2nd season dvd on order anxiously waiting
Outlander is the best show on T.V. It has everything, romance, battles, great characters, terrific acting, direction, writing. The series only gets better, each season based on a book, in ordeer, next season will also cover the 1746 rising. Where the Scots rose up against the British in an endeavor to restoe the stuarts to the English and Scottish thrones, so full on War. In the second book, just before the final battle of the rising, Jamie sends Claire back to the 20th Century for safety and the safety of their unborn childThe third season will be based on the… Read more »
Oh wow thanks so much for the spoilers.
You should really put a warning somewhere in there if you plan on posting spoilers. I understand your love for the show and the books but it’s not your job to rob others of enjoying it for themselves.
Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ.
Love this show, have read all the books. Got Starz just for this series, if they cancel it, I will cancel Starz.
Are you kidding? It’s the absolute best show on TV anywhere. NO it shouldn’t be canceled, EVER!!!!! We want as many seasons as we can get. The acting on this show is stellar and Sam Heughan and Catriona Balfe are spot on as Jamie and Claire. They deserve Emmys three times over. Please STARZ, we LOVE this show!!! It’s the most faithful adaptation I’ve ever seen and kudos for STARZ and Ron Moore for that!
