Starz was very happy with the early reception of their new Outlander TV show so they gave it an early season two renewal. The cable channel has often given quick renewals but the series are then often cancelled after two seasons. Will Starz regret giving Outlander a second year order so soon? Would it have been cancelled if they had waited?
The Outlander series revolves around Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945. She finds herself mysteriously thrown back in time, to 1743 Scotland, and forced to marry another man to save her life. A passionate affair is ignited. The rest of the cast includes Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Annette Badland, Stephen Walters, Laura Donnelly, Lotte Verbeek, James Fleet, Duncan Lacroix, Roderick Gilkison, Simon Callow, Grant O’Rourke, Bill Paterson, and Simon Meacock.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
1/29 update: Have you heard that season two has been cancelled? Well, it hasn’t.
Final season averages: 0.26 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.04 million total viewers.

What do you think? Do you like the Outlander TV show? Do you think it should have been renewed for a second season or cancelled instead?
The show has already been renewed and they are currently filming season 2 so why do people keep talking about it getting renewed or not. All I can say is it is based on a book and the author fought fiercely to make sure they put the graphic rape scene in the show and of course they are going to try to please her because I am sure she can withdrawal any further books at any time. The show is following books so it probably is going to have a lot of stuff that goes along with the books. Come… Read more »
Janie, the reason there is not only confusion about season 2 renewal and the fact that I thought they were going into Season 3, is I looked everywhere in this website to see if it has been renewed and could not find it anywhere. As for confusion whether the upcoming is Season 2 or 3 – that’s easy. Next year (2015-2016) will be the third year the show has been on the air. I wish someone would finally clear this confusion up! I rely on TVSERIESFINALE.COM to keep me posted on renewals and cancellations. Up until this new website design,… Read more »
As you can see from the dates in the chart above, the recent episodes were part of the first season. As many cable channels do, Starz broke up the season into two parts. In the first paragraph, there’s a link about the show’s early second season renewal. We don’t know when those episodes will premiere because Starz hasn’t announced it yet. The series hasn’t been renewed for a third season yet but it’s much too early for that. I hope this helps.
The only ones “repulsed” or upset by the story of the season finale are those who have not read the book series. Those who have read the book(s) knew how “dark” this particular story line would be. I’m ready for the next season! We also watch “GOT” but this by far is our favorite TV show!
Season finale on Saturday was to graphic and made me so sick,….I will NOT watch this show again….
Please renew the Outlander original series because it is an unique story, and I would like to see more series of that time and period.
I absolutely love it! I have read all the books, and love them as well. Can’t wait for the next. But the series, I love just as much!! Please renew for 3rd season, because this is my favorite series so far.
I was hooked until last nights season finally, it literally made me sick. I was so repulsed at how graphic they were, it was bad enough that they had to make Jamie get raped and made the scene so graphic but then as he was talking to Claire about it he said “he made love to me” since when is forced and brutal sex ever considered making love. You have lost this viewer. You took a beautiful show and turned it into something disgusting.
I read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon two times back in the 90s when it was first published and kept up with the books until book 5. Children cut my reading time down and working with children stopped my reading time. Outlander is still one of the best all around books I have ever read and encourage anyone watching the series to read it and the whole series that follows. I have had an image in my head of what both Jamie and Clare looked like and was reluctant to watch the Starz series because I wanted to retain those images… Read more »
If it DOESN’T renew Outlander, then I will drop Starz – had to correct that last sentence and can’t find an edit button in here – didn’t your old site have an edit button? Please put one in for those of us on tablets? Thank you…
It has already been renewed. They started filming season 2 about 3 weeks ago.
Yes, renew, renew, renew!!! Combines “The Perils of Pauline” (Google it), the best sex scenes (compared to the gratuitous dreck of “Game of Thrones”) and accurate depictions of a little-known historical era. And did I mention the costumes and scenery?
Outlander is amazing. I had never read the books, but I am now. Totally hooked.
They better not cancel, or I’m cancelling Starz.
this is THE BEST thing I have watched in a long time on TV. I have read the books and the characters are just as I imagined them. I think you are crazy if you do not continue with this series.
We love Outlander here in Australia.
I hope it gets renewed for a Season 3
Definitely renewed! Great tv show! Love their lovevsto
I love this series & hope it gets renewed for a third season.
I like Outlander tv verra, verra much. Often the TV series improves the motivation of the characters in comparison to the book. The love scenes are very passionate. The sets and scenery are lush. I wish, however, that the happy times could be developed more, and more time be spent enjoying them, before we get to the tough and tortuous stuff. I hope the future TV series chooses to includes humour and continues the development of the relationships among the characters, as well. The wait between season 1 and season 2 was very long, however. And, I understand, the wait… Read more »
HBO should take it over sad
Why sad? I think Starz been great! We got 16 episodes for Season One and they’ve ordered another 13 episodes for S2. I don’t think HBO ever gives a show more than 10, so I don’t know why you would want HBO to take it over…unless you read that ridiculous rumor about it being cancelled. I really wish this site would take that article down. It confuses a lot of people and there’s no way that Starz is going to cancel Outlander! It’s their highest-rated show!
This is truly a keeper. Great acting, beautiful story and magnificent scenery.. Thank you Starzs keep it going.
