As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?

Plz bring it back.. I am so much in devotion with the series, very keen to know what’s next .
This series was beautifully done. God bless you Roma Downey and Mark Burnett for bringing us this spiritual journey through history and The Word. Many have heard the story of Christ’s birth and dying on the cross but few knew the stories of how the disciples and apostles too gave their lives to continue Jesus’s message. These stories strengthen my belief in Jesus. I believe the disciples would not have risked all just for a story. They had to have truly witnessed the miracle of Christ’s Resurrection and received the Holy Spirit. I do read the stories in the Bible… Read more »
This show was excellent, everyone has done shows leading up to the crucifixion but then stoped there. This show isn’t only for christians it shows a lot of historical facts about the romans as well. Background on Calligula that I didn’t know was also discussed. If NBC was smart they would bring it back.
I would definitely watch season 2. This is a great tv series.
You guys shouldn’t have cancelled this show you have know idea it has had on the ppl that don’t have a clue about jesus they know of him but not who he really is and what his purpose truly is when he died on the cross for our sins most churches doesn’t teach it( they preach from the pulpit a ppl pleasing sermon) that show could of bought a lot of ppl back to christ if you guys wild have put it out in the air right like u wild good done if u were hosting a major fight or… Read more »
Was EXCELLENT! So hoping for season 2. Will be sorry same actors/actresses will not be the same. Was very dissapointed. There is to much trash on T.V. Need more of this!
Hoping for the 2nd season, I Watched every episode.
I will watch this show on any forum, shame on NBC, while regular television focuses on non sense reality, serial crime drama and such, it’s a shame a wholesome faith based series is cut. I hope Roma Downey and her colleagues succeed in producing future series right through the Acts of the Apostles and further on with the grace of God. This is a great learning tool in spreading the Word that will encourage a thirst for more. And I applaud all the actors, there were many accomplished of whom I familiar with and found they all did a superb… Read more »
