As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?
Yes pls bring in Season 2!!!! Happy to pay to see it!!!!
I still have the complete first season on my DVR. I have been checking periodically online to see if the show will actually return. I will even pay to watch this show. Have you thought about just having it on netflix? There has to be a way this show can continue. This show followed the bible almost to the T. Please bring it back SOON.
Please please please bring this show back. My family and I are very eager to see more. The cast and production and everything is so wonderfully amazing in this show. I would choose it over game of thrones because it is truth and brings the history of the early Church to light. Please bring it back. I hope a network is found soon.
I’ve just finished Season 1 of A.D Kingdoms and Empire, and I loved every second of it. It’s sad to see that shows that have sexual content and all the negative aspects of the shows, like GOT and a lot of others, are more popular than A.D. As a Christian, after watching the show I learnt a lot and understand better, the stories and characters of the bible. It helped me to understand who the characters were from the bible and what their role was and even getting to know new stories that I didn’t know before I watched A.D.… Read more »
I was very sad and disappointed this series was canceled. This series really showed the love of Christ. I will be praying for another season!
I am so disappointed there is no season 2 , through brilliant acting, production and direction, as well as a faithful story line to the Book of Acts this series really brought the story of the first Christians to life. I was so moved by the acts of forgiveness and Love…Saul being welcomed into the Apostles and becoming Paul..and I nearly cried my eyes out when Cornelius found Christ …this series really showed the love of Christ. I will be praying for another season…another great way to spread the good news..
please keep going to produce the series because I love this series so much
and you made it great. I am Thai and wanna watch this series. please produce the seires, I will wait here in Thailand when new part of the series is come
Media against God! Well, we all know who will win. It’s a shame that the channel couldn’t bear to see hearts turning to God…after all it’s their survival, isn’t it? And I think more than anything, it’s the society that is increasingly finding God a burden!
It is one of the finest productions I’ve seen. Not just the faith part of it, which is beautifully depicted, it is also an amazingly well taken movie with some ‘par excellence’ actors. Each playing their pasts commendably, with Caiphas, the Centurion, Pilate, Peter, Claudia, Caiphas’ wife, Martha and each LIVING their roles.
I miss it much, and wish someone takes it forward, in faith! I loved and so too my wife and my two little children – what a well taken movie and how wonderfully ‘lived’!
And when it’s about Jesus! There’s none like him!
Please make more of AD Kingdom and Empire. I loved it!! I will be watching and waiting in anticipation. The casting was amazing. Well done!
Of course the network doesn’t want to continue the story of the GREATEST GOD MENTIONED IN ALL OF HISTORY!!! The producers should continue on finding another channel to show the story.
I watched this series every Sunday when it was on TV. We looked forward to seeing it every week. Now, over 2 years later, I am still thinking about it wondering if or when it will continue. I really hope there can be a continuation. This can be made into many, many seasons. I would love to see it on TV again but even it’s on Netflix or online. I am re-watching it right now!
There are several seasons of less meaningful shows. Just watched on Netflix. Quite disappointed there isn’t a second season. It was great seeing the Bible passages read come to life with modern effects. See the perplexed expressions on the disciples when asked to perform miracles. The uncertainty and amazement when God answers and the person is raised from the dead.
You realise also these men really lived in perilous times and we now don’t have and excuse not to preach.
This was a great series and well done for Netflix for making it available. I thought that the script writers had done a great job at interpreting the Bible and the choice of cast was excellent. It’s a shame to hear that there are no plans for series two but God willing this will change soon.
I liked the series. It is to be expected that shows like this would be canceled and others. The evil of this world. There’s hope people want the truth. I for one will not watch NBC or ABC. Don’t give in keep fighting for truth.
