As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?
I really waiting for season 2 this is great film and I cannot wait for second part
This series was excellent, and we are really hoping that it will continue. We are letting others know it is available (season 1), and how good it is.
A real pity it will not continue. The historical approach to the conflict within the people of Judea; the Sanhedrin, the Zealots and the Apostles was great, the acting too. Not so the “special effects” or the miracle scenes, really bad and corny, bringing the level of the series down. But knowing the scriptures, I’d like to congratulate the people responsible for the script and the historical accuracy.
I just stumbled across this show. Even though I know the stories, this brings it to life. The different personalities, the persecutions, hardships, I couldn’t believe there was no season 2 – so sad. It is disappointing to think the rest of the story may not be told in the same way. The actors and scenes were superb. I hope this will continue on soon.
Please air AD season 2! I just saw the first season on Netflix and loved it!
It was fantastic!!! I know others will like it if they just get a chance to watch.
I’m sad there will be no season 2. I really enjoyed season 1. It was captivating. I learned a lot.
I am VERY disappointed it was cancelled. My husband and I watched it together and were looking forward to watching more of them!
Please bring a Season 2 to this excellent and well-made series.
My husband and I just discovered A.D. Kingdom And Empire and watched the episode of Season 1. We cannot believe that there will not be a season 2. Shame on NBC! Hope that a Season 2 will eventually be made. It was an excellent series.
Love it!!! Very interesting, educative and beautiful series! I was very disappointed to learn that there was no season 2 and/or perhaps season 3.
I found this series not only entertaining, but most of all educative as it helped me understand better my faith. I can’t wait to watch the next season!
