NBC has cancelled Awake, their cop series with an alternate reality twist. Created by Kyle Killen (Lone Star), the 13th and final episode will air on Thursday, May 24th. Sadly we might never learn exactly what was going on in the head of Detective Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs).
Fans of this unique TV series are understandably upset and the cast and crew aren’t too crazy about the news either. Here’s what they had to say:
Wilmer Valderrama (Efrem Vega): “Wanted 2 say thank you 2 all our amazing fans 4 being so loyal & loving our @NBCAwake.. We believed in the show &…And put our hearts in every Ep.. We made something that had never been on TV, we are proud of the journey.. And grateful to… Have shared it with you all, we love you.. Make sure to NOT miss our season closing episodes.. We will finish with a bang.. LITERALLY!”
Laura Allen (Hannah Britten): “Circle of life. Back in the ring! Truly, thank you for all who watched. #Awake. #NBC. #whoknowsimight’vebeendeadthewholetimeanyway.”
Dylan Minnette (Rex Britten): “2 more episodes until the finale of #Awake We had such a good run, and the show, despite this, was truly great.” “It was an incredible experience working with everyone, thank you for the opportunity. Couldn’t have been blessed with a better cast and crew” To the cast and crew, he wrote, “You are all so talented, I’m so grateful that I had the chance to work with all of you!… Thank you all so much!”
BD Wong (Therapist John Lee) retweeted a lot of others’ comments and simply wrote, “what a lousy way to wake up from a nap!”
Daniela Bobadilla (Emma): “Sad to be writing this tweet.. From the bottom of my heart I am beyond grateful for the opportunity and experience I had on #Awake. Love…every single person on the cast and crew. So proud to have been part of such an intelligent, cool show. Thank you @killen8!!! :):):)”
Michaela McManus (Tara): “Thanks to everyone who tuned in these past couple months. Very sorry to say good-bye… #RIPAwake”
Nicole Burke (first assistant director): “Just got the bad news #awake was cancelled. Thank you to all the fans that watched and to the talented cast & crew.” “To the brain behind #AWAKE @killen8 Thank you for a wild and crazy ride. I enjoyed every minute well maybe every minute. Till next time!”
Kyle Killen (creator, executive producer): “no, don’t see us taking awake anywhere else. yes, the season finale is a really satisfying way to go out. our best EP + penguin” “guys its cool. awake lasted 600% longer than lone star. at that rate next 1 be on until end of time. now, anyone know if Whitney is hiring?” “that was not meant to be shot at Whitney #promise #justlookingforplacetotakeairmattress”
Lost’s Damon Lindelof wrote to Killen, “Small consolation, but I believe AWAKE will still be talked about in a decade. And fondly.” Killen responded, “thank you. I’ve always wanted to say to someone “you’re a prince” and this seems like the opportunity I’ve been waiting for!”
Josh Friedman, who’s Finder series was also cancelled, wrote, “I choose to live in a version of my life where @killen8 ‘s #Awake is still on the air.”
What do you think? Are you also upset that Awake won’t be coming back for a second season? What would you say to the cast and crew about the program?

I’m an 18 year old girl, and this is the only show that my whole family can watch without complaining. This show brought my family together. I can’t believe they’re cancelling it when there’s still so much more to see. My family will be so disappointed.
Awake is one of the best shows on…makes me never want to get into watching a series again because all the ones I like they always cancel and put up some nonsensical “reality” show…duh
I think Awake was the best new show this season – perhaps the best show, period — and I am very sad that it has been cancelled. The premise is so unique and thought-provoking. the writing and acting are top notch, and I have really become invested in the whole story line. And I just adore Jason Isaacs — and the rest of the cast as well. I can only hope NBC reconsiders or someone else picks up this show, although that doesn’t sound likely. What a loss for those of us who want to watch something more intelligent than… Read more »
NBC! you just cancelled your best show, you should have marketed this one much better
catch your network when you have something this creative again. A big mistake for a network that lacked really good TV
So sad to hear “Awake” being cancelled! Whos stupid idea was this. Angry fan.
Thanks NBC!!! You get me hooked and then leave me hanging out to dry…first you killed Dr. Green in ER…now you won’t renew “Awake”!!! I really enjoyed this show…maybe s cable station will pick it up!!! Good luck!!! I will miss you!!!
Wilmer said it best “We made something that had never been on TV”, they took the same cop drama **** that appeals to the mindless masses and gave it a unique and interesting twist. I feel like this series was before it’s time or put in the wrong place at the wrong time, this sucks even more so now that we know we’ll never get any answers. I think creators should start figuring out to wrap up a series in one season, because at the rate were going in 50 years scripted series will be dead.
What a shame. I had a feeling that it was WAY too intelligent and thought-provoking to reach a wide audience. TV today is slacker reality and crap for all the lunkheads out there.
It seems that every time I get attached to an interesting, thought provoking program the station cancels it and puts something mundane on instead. It’s no wonder I don’t watch much tv. It’s too frustrating. Television is definitely for the teenage group.
This was such a creative and intelligent show, and I’m really sad that it won’t be able to develop! It’s so frustrating for fans of these kinds of unique sci fi types shows because we fall in love with the stories and characters, and they’re gone in one season. It’s crazy too because we’re some of the most loyal fans. Oh, how I wish networks would give shows more time to develop. Stay tuned for another version of Law and Order (hate it) or some stupid, cheap reality show. Say goodbye to well-written, unique dramas. I think network television really… Read more »
Gutted that such a great show has been cancelled, the writing, acting, concept and execution was near perfect. Not sure Kyle what you have to do to make it to a 2nd series of one of your creations but whatever happens please stick to your principles. There’s so much dross on TV right now that Awake was a beacon of hope amongst it. Sorry too for all the cast, absolutely incredible performances throughout. Intelligent, thought-provoking and with so much potential for future storylines, the show really made me think about what I’d just watched and that is a real rarity… Read more »
Awake was probably the one of THE best shows I’ve ever seen. The writing was fresh and original and didn’t contain typical cop show dialogue or stories. It’s just so natural sounding, you believe that these are real people in real scenarios. The acting was absolutely fantastic by every single person on the show. There was never a point where I thought, “Oh that’s lame,” or, “That would never happen!”. The way the actors portray their characters, sometimes I actually forget it’s just a tv show. That rarely happens to me. The story is one of the best I’ve ever… Read more »
I am not a TV person. My TV time is very limited. I am faithful to Biggest Loser, Celeb Apprentice, SMASH, The Voice, and AWAKE!!! I look forward to Thursday just because of AWAKE!! My son and I watch all of these programs together and it is a great connecting tool for us.. I got 5 additional people to watch the program just cause I was wacko crazy over this show! Apparently NBC knows how to appeal to m, the not-so TV watcher !! Oh NBC, please re-think this one… !!! Use your AWAKE mind to think it over. Both… Read more »
Please write NBC and try to get them to bring this back. It was underpromoted and a truly awesome show. After every episode I would just think “WOW” – this is fabulous TV — far too uncommon these days. I agree with other reviewers – why bother with new shows when networks cast the best of them aside? I wish TNT or someone else would pick this up – to hell with NBC. But what a loss from an entertainment side. I hope everyone involved in the show understands they were part of an amazing project, and the writers, actors,… Read more »
I cannot believe that you (NBC) are cancelling such an intelligent, unique, creative, excellent show. I am speaking of both the writing and the acting. But I shouldn’t be surprised because nothing else on your network comes close, in fact most of your shows are crap. Which is why the last episode of Awake will be the last time I watch your network. I am even going to boycott the local news on your network. You are pathetic!
