Creature Comforts ran on CBS for only three weeks before being pulled due to low ratings. The British version of the claymation show has been a big hit for some time, so why didn’t the US incarnation catch on?
Series Producer Gareth Owen tells us, “If we had to do it all again, I don’t think there’s a lot we would change. The main problem appears to be sustaining interest over a half hour show. All the UK shows apart from one Christmas episode were under 10 minutes, which seems to be an ideal length for a ‘talking heads’ show. However writing plots, scripts or storylines goes against the rules of Creature Comforts and is not something that we would ever do.”
Though short-lived, the series earned a small but devoted group of fans. That fact isn’t lost on Owen who says, “We are extremely grateful to all the people who have shown their support since the show was pulled. We always knew it would be a show that would grow in popularity through word of mouth, the trouble was that it wasn’t given enough time to grow.”
There’s no official word from CBS but Owen tells us that the producers are still in discussions with the network about Creature Comforts’ future. For those who want to see the four unaired episodes and don’t want to wait for CBS to make up their minds, the complete DVD set will be released on October 9th. Stay tuned!
I perferred the UK version because it was less “adult” and more fun. For some reason, Americans need to sex it up all the time. I liked the subtitles of the UK version far better.
i love creature comforts much…..the best…

I’m in my mid 30s and I never married but I liked this show too
My husband and I are in our late 30’s and don’t find many programs on TV to be worth our time. We have about a half-dozen programs that we make the effort to see on a regular basis. Creature Comforts was one that was on our “must see” list – it produced rip-roaring laughter from both of us. We’re extremely disappointed that it’s been cancelled and are keeping our fingers crossed that soon, SOMEONE will bring it back for us.
Pretty please ?
My husband and I would really love to see this show back on the air. It is wonderful!!
What went wrong?!? No one knew this brilliant program was on. While it seemed to me to have broad appeal, viewers who might have been core audience (fans of Aardman, subversive animation, dry humor) were simply not watching TV in this season of reruns, gameshows, and talent searches. Among our closest friends, many of whom fondly recall loving the original Creature Comforts short at the Sick & Twisted Animation Festival in the early 90s, NONE of them knew the CBS show existed until it was already cancelled.

Well what do you know? Somebody pulled a great little program off the air (Creature Comforts:America) because it had nothing bad or immoral in it!
Figured as much! Make something good and clean and very funny and it gets dumped in favor of the junk stuff. Why can’t you guys give all of us out here some good stuff to entertain us?
And i went to great lengths to be a p.r. person for your program, telling all my friends! Phoey on youey!
I also loved and missed this show. I check this website to see if it will get a second chance.
My Suggestion: If you do re-release this show, explain to viewers up-front that the dialogue is from regular people and that the show’s talent pick the animals and venue for comedic effect. I had to check the website to learn that. Otherwise it sounds like bad writing. It’s the juxtaposition that makes the show work.
Please give the show another try. Thanks,
I am so upset that this show got cancelled. I used to watch it with my kids ages 8 and 11 we never laughed so hard in our lives. What is wrong with CBS. Maybe I should think twice about watching future shows on this network.
BRING THEM BACK!!!!!
Happy mommy in Mass
This show was absolutely awesome. My husband and I could not wait to get home on Monday nights to watch it. We are in our early 30’s. I have not told him yet that it was cx’d. He will be furious!! We always support the shows that we love, even when we are not home we leave the channel playing. We were channel surfing one Monday evening on Comcast, and we immediately loved it. We had never seen one commercial of it before ever. It was just dumb luck. Bring this show back!! Three weeks could not possibly be enough… Read more »
