ABC just cancelled freshman comedy Imaginary Mary, while it renewed Speechless and American Housewife for a second season each. How will its new Downward Dog TV show fare? Will this sitcom prove to be the Alphabet Network’s best friend, or go straight to the dogs? Cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.
A live-action comedy, Downward Dog stars Allison Tolman, Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Siovhan Christensen, Ayden Mayeri, Andrew Gorell, Sam Hodges (voice), and Ned the dog. The sitcom centers on Nan (Tolman), and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Hodges). Martin tells Nan’s story from the perspective of woman’s best friend. The ABC TV series explores the ups and downs of modern-day human life, through the eyes of a devoted dog.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/31 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the Downward Dog TV series on ABC? Should it have been cancelled or renewed for a second season on ABC?
6/23 update: ABC has cancelled Downward Dog. The creators, however, aren’t given up on it. Details here.
I am an huge animal rescuer for over 14 years and I just LOVE this show. A perspective from a dog on how we treat them. Insightful, hilarious and just opens your minds on maybe how dogs think. Looking forward to a second season. I LMAO and my dogs bark at Martin.
This show is just what families need. The phones, Ipads and video games layed aside while we watched as a family and laughed together. Don’t you think enough reality TV is enough already?
Please, I love this show! I agree, the episodes are getting better as the characters are being fleshed out more. MARTIN rocks! This show has not yet failed to crack me up and it also brings me to tears in every episode I watch. Please continue it!
I like Downward Dog and would love to see a second season. It makes me laugg. I like quirky shows and this is one of the best.
I agree with Val .
I think that the episodes are getting better as the season goes on! People below are asking for a little bit too much depth from this sitcom. Also I think the characters are being fleshed out more and more each episode as they should. It’s fun and silly and sweet and most importantly it made me laugh out loud at least once per episode. I say keep it going! Great easy watching summer comedy.
The 30% dip in ratings is a very telling sign. In this case, the sign says, “STOP”. I was hoping for a dog character that was endearing and somewhat familiar (as a long time dog family). Instead, we get a dog who speaks fluent Valley Girl, interjecting “like” between almost every other word. That grates on my nerves so badly that it becomes almost physically painful to watch. The human characters are no better. Take almost every stereotype out there and multiply it by infinity. The clueless boss? Check. The female character trying her hardest to make it in her… Read more »
Do not cancel. It’s entertaining and funny . Maybe having a dog and being an animal lover is why I appreciate the show or having the imagination of how a dog would see life . Hodges voice is perfect for Martin.
Not a well written show. It lacks and doesn’t draw in a viewer. Unimaginative and boring. I tried to be open to watching this show when it aired and was unimpressed. Do not renew this show.
Stupid show. You must be grasping at straws. Not entertaining at all.
My husband and I both love the show! Please do not cancel!
Next Tuesday’s ratings will determine whether this dog hangs around. I’m betting “no”.
Woof! .70/3.77 Downward Dog, indeed!
Dog didn’t “doo” well and this is when they are trying to get people hooked in. Yet on #twitter they’re calling it a success. Just dog-gone unfunny.
Did you notice most of their tweets are from them. Scratching their own back.
I love this show and so do all of my animal-loving friends. Martin is wonderful! And the fact that he was a long-term shelter dog makes him even better. Please keep this show going.
This show might actually be somewhat good if every other word wasn’t “like”. It’s, like, annoying that, like, every other, like, word is, like, ‘like’. Five minutes into the show, I wanted to hurl a brick through the TV screen. Either cancel the show, or get some writers that know how to, like, write, or, like, whatever.
Do not cancel! Enjoyable! Funny. Know others who are just finding the show.
Do not cancel.
Love this show! If you are a dog owner and always wondered what your dog was thinking, Martin lets you know.
