ABC just cancelled freshman comedy Imaginary Mary, while it renewed Speechless and American Housewife for a second season each. How will its new Downward Dog TV show fare? Will this sitcom prove to be the Alphabet Network’s best friend, or go straight to the dogs? Cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.
A live-action comedy, Downward Dog stars Allison Tolman, Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Siovhan Christensen, Ayden Mayeri, Andrew Gorell, Sam Hodges (voice), and Ned the dog. The sitcom centers on Nan (Tolman), and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Hodges). Martin tells Nan’s story from the perspective of woman’s best friend. The ABC TV series explores the ups and downs of modern-day human life, through the eyes of a devoted dog.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/31 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the Downward Dog TV series on ABC? Should it have been cancelled or renewed for a second season on ABC?
6/23 update: ABC has cancelled Downward Dog. The creators, however, aren’t given up on it. Details here.
This refreshing sweet comedy has a special appeal to anyone who has ever lived with a dog. A welcome change from the snarkiness that pervades most TV comedies. I’m hoping for renewal.
Great down to earth show. We need this great show.
Love this show! One of the few new shows this season I look forward to and watch every episode. I laugh every week – much needed right now.
Loving it. Martin is so cute. I love dogs (especially mine).
I love Downward Dog. Give it a chance..people need to Get It first to like it…it’s a sweet show. Much needed
With ALL the heavy dramas.
I really like the show, EXCEPT Martin says the word “like”, like so many times…..it drives me, like, crazy!!!
This show is entertaining . it gives a fun way to observe a dogs life . In a time when the news is screaming daily problems and every show is about lawsuits and politicos i need a little Guy to take the edge off ! It makes the viewer happy ! Is that ok !! And we love Nan and her idiot boyfriend . Good work by everyone . Tell the sponsors We like it!
Thx Under 30

Have just started watching the snow. Didn’t know quite what to expect. Tonight’s show with the trash is a good one. I can relate with my dogs.
This is such a different show. I love it. It will take a little time to catch on. It has such great writing. Please don’t cancel it.
I Love this show. Only one on tv right now worth watching. Ok, except This Is Us reruns.
please don’t cancel. Martin & Nan have a special bond. this is a refreshing change of pace from the violence, stupidity & lewdness all too common.
This is a funny show. Give it more time to catch on. It’s great for families, pet owners or just anyone who wants to laugh. It’s the sort of program we need now. 🙂
Give this show a little more time to catch on. There are so many possibility and it really is a fun show. I love it
I love this show. I would be heartbroken if it was cancelled. I love the down to earth cast, and the fact that they used a rescue dog.
I really enjoy the “freshness” that this show brings. It makes me look at my own dogs in a different way -wondering what they’re thinking and how they’re feeling. I’d be lost without my babies.
