ABC just cancelled freshman comedy Imaginary Mary, while it renewed Speechless and American Housewife for a second season each. How will its new Downward Dog TV show fare? Will this sitcom prove to be the Alphabet Network’s best friend, or go straight to the dogs? Cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.
A live-action comedy, Downward Dog stars Allison Tolman, Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Siovhan Christensen, Ayden Mayeri, Andrew Gorell, Sam Hodges (voice), and Ned the dog. The sitcom centers on Nan (Tolman), and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Hodges). Martin tells Nan’s story from the perspective of woman’s best friend. The ABC TV series explores the ups and downs of modern-day human life, through the eyes of a devoted dog.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. 6/23 update: ABC has cancelled Downward Dog. The creators, however, aren’t given up on it. Details here.
Why? Why?? Why??? Why would any network tease us with such a wonderful show as Downward Dog and then after 8 episodes… Cancel it?! After every episode I couldn’t wait for the next! We told family and friends about it and they all started watching it on Hulu. We most desperately need it back on the schedule! Please rethink this, please. We need Downward Dog back!
What the heck is wrong with you guys? Come on Downward Dog was funny and original, well except compared with Mr Ed. I hope this series finds a new home.
Get rid of “Speechless”. That show is horrible. “Downward Dog” and “American Housewife” are both worth keeping on the schedule. “Imaginary Mary” was simply stupid and ill conceived.
The title killed the show. It sounds like a show about yoga. Who wants to see that?! It was my all time favourite show. We watched it by mistake the first time and were hooked. Change the title and relaunch the show.
I loved this show. It was hard for me to watch it all the time, because of my work schedule, but when I was home, I looked forward to watching it. I can’t believe they cancelled this and kept on “American Housewife” and “Speechless”. I hope this show makes a come back somewhere. I thought it was such a unique , fresh viewpoint. It made me laugh.
I liked downward dog, if the stations would quit shuffling everything around I could keep track and remember when to watch something. I laughed so hard at the same stupid stuff we do with our dogs. give the shows a time and let them lock in, big bang took several years to grow.

Absolutely delightful. I love Martin. Can’t believe this show was canceled.
