Last week, CBS gave full season orders to all five of its new shows. The network execs have now cut the episode order for the veteran Medium series. What’s going on? Is Medium next to be cancelled?
Starring Patrica Arquette, Medium premiered in 2005 on NBC. The series ran on the peacock network for five seasons until it was cancelled. Because CBS produces the drama and it’s a syndication success, the eye network picked it up for season six and paired it with compatible Ghost Whisperer. The latter was cancelled last May after a decline in ratings but Medium survived.
This season, Medium has seen a significant decline in viewership. It’s averaged just a 1.3 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 6.2 million viewers. That’s a drop of 35% in the demo when compared to the same number of weeks last fall.
Medium is currently the network’s lowest rated show, by far. Fridays are a tough night to draw an audience but a 1.3 average is still very low. CSI: NY, which airs at 9pm, is averaging a 1.8 rating.
Based on Medium’s poor ratings and the success of the other CBS programming, it’s not surprising that the network has cut the show’s episode order for season seven. The cast and crew will make just 13 episodes instead of the traditional 22 installments. You may remember that CBS did something similar with Numb3rs last season and cancelled it in the spring.
This represents Medium’s smallest season in its history and will almost surely will be the drama’s last. CBS will likely replace it on the schedule by midseason.
On the positive side, if this is indeed Medium’s final season, producers will presumably have enough time to give the series some kind of closure.
What do you think? Is it time for Medium to be cancelled or are you still hoping for season eight?

Medium is the best show on TV..the acting is stellar and I love the entire cast.
I do like that this cast looks like they could all really be related. I was interested in how the older daughters destiny would manifest but they chose the wrong series to cancel. Ghost Whisperer should have remained.
This is a terrific show! I loved Ghost Whisperer and started watching Medium because it followed. Now I’m hooked. I caught the reruns on Lifetime, so I’m up to speed on who’s who. I really hope CBS will not be stupid and cancel this show, too. If they do, I’m going to stop watching ANYTHING on CBS, even other shows I like, like the CSI’s.
This is a wonderful show and I truly hope CBS thinks this over before chopping it. It has so much substance and I thoroughly enjoy watching it! I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
PLEASE…PLEASE…PLEASE…NO…NO…NO…do not cancel Medium!!! This is one of my top FAVORITE shows! My husband and I LOVE this show!!! We look soooo forward to it every week. We have NEVER missed one episode! LOVE ALL the characters and the family that they are. This is an excellent show. I cannot believe how a cancellation is even considered!!! This is insane!!!,
Love the show! Never missed an episode! I will miss it!
I was hoping that they would cancel medium the only reason I was watching it because it came on after ghost whisperer and the other tv channel had nothing that I liked
I hope this show will not be canceled. It has become part of our family.
It is RIDICULOUS that CBS shifts one of the most ENTERTAINING shows on TV and expects it to not go down in ratings. The minute I saw that Medium was moved to the 7:00 slot, I began to worry. Medium, as it has been before, is a show for grown ups to enjoy after they settle in, put the kids to bed, etc. At 7, people are still moving around. Medium is one of the best on network TV. There really is nothing else like it. The writing is superb and after all these seasons, it hasn’t jumped the shark or… Read more »
Love this show!!!!!!!
agree with LM lost its comical approach. Throwing the kids into the mix is good but not so serious with the children. Like ghost whisperer like the talks with the “dead people” but keep it light
Any news on if they’ll have time to write a proper series finale?
was told by a staff writer on the show that it was cancelled.
Medium used to be one of my favorite TV shows. I looked forward to watching it each week. But it now seems to have run out of new and interesting material. This year there is way too much ‘over drama’. It’s lost it’s comical approach to things. There is way too many episodes centering around Ariel instead of Allison and her powers. I don’t know if the writers changed when the series moved from one network to the other but it appears the show has ‘jumped the shark’ for sure with the path we’re being led down this year.
I love Medium.Please don’t cancel it.
I suspect this is the end, but I will really miss this show. This season has been better than ever–I’m sure it being on Fridays doesn’t help.
