Last week, CBS gave full season orders to all five of its new shows. The network execs have now cut the episode order for the veteran Medium series. What’s going on? Is Medium next to be cancelled?
Starring Patrica Arquette, Medium premiered in 2005 on NBC. The series ran on the peacock network for five seasons until it was cancelled. Because CBS produces the drama and it’s a syndication success, the eye network picked it up for season six and paired it with compatible Ghost Whisperer. The latter was cancelled last May after a decline in ratings but Medium survived.
This season, Medium has seen a significant decline in viewership. It’s averaged just a 1.3 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 6.2 million viewers. That’s a drop of 35% in the demo when compared to the same number of weeks last fall.
Medium is currently the network’s lowest rated show, by far. Fridays are a tough night to draw an audience but a 1.3 average is still very low. CSI: NY, which airs at 9pm, is averaging a 1.8 rating.
Based on Medium’s poor ratings and the success of the other CBS programming, it’s not surprising that the network has cut the show’s episode order for season seven. The cast and crew will make just 13 episodes instead of the traditional 22 installments. You may remember that CBS did something similar with Numb3rs last season and cancelled it in the spring.
This represents Medium’s smallest season in its history and will almost surely will be the drama’s last. CBS will likely replace it on the schedule by midseason.
On the positive side, if this is indeed Medium’s final season, producers will presumably have enough time to give the series some kind of closure.
What do you think? Is it time for Medium to be cancelled or are you still hoping for season eight?

I admit, I have been missing Medium this season, but not because of the story lines. I just love the relationship between Joe and Allison, and thoroughly enjoy the interactions between the cast overall. Joe would be my ideal guy, if there really was a guy like him, and Allison is one huge, emotional rollercoaster all the time, and this is one of the shows I normally make time for. I would really, really miss it if it were gone, and I always catch the re-runs, whether on NBC or any other station, I just like it that much! I… Read more »

I love Medium!!! Please do NOT cancel it. It is an awesome show!!!!
Please do not cancel Medium— it is our favorite show on television, and by far the most creative show on television… put it back in its old time slot and viewership will rise again. The show is great and we would miss it very much. It is the most realistic depiction of a family on television, plesse let it continue…
Please, please, please, kill this show! It has basically jumped the shark this season. The daughter Bridgette is an absolute annoyance, and was miscast from the start.
The show is unusual in a lot of ways, but it is also entertaining. There are so many dumb shows on TV that I watch less and less TV because of it. ABC has a lot of really foolish shows that they consider funny (i.e. Wednesday comedy night) and there is not one show that is worth the time to watch. I don’t know anyone who wastes their time watching any of them. I like supense shows that a person has to think about, and most of the stuff on TV doesn’t need any brains to think about. All the… Read more »
I too am very upset by the episode order cut and the very possible cancellation. Medium’s ratings are increasing each week and are averaging around 6-7 million. There is simply no need for the episode order cut. Please give your feedback about Medium to CBS at http://www.cbs.com/info/user_services/fb_global_form.php, or go to cbs.com and at the bottom of the main page you’ll find a link for feedback. Let them know Medium is a valued show and should NOT be cancelled or cut.
love medium…do we need another law show, cop show, reality show???? I loved Ghost whisper too!!! KEEP IT!!
no dont cancel it please! I love that show!
Medium is and has been one of my favorite shows, right along with NCIS and Mentalist. Please don’t cancel it.
Please do not cancel the show! My mom and I really enjoy this show and Patricia does an amazing job on this show. I think what CBS should consider doing is moving the show to a different day/time. If that does not changing the ratings then please make sure to send this great show off on a high note.
PLEASE sign this petition, telling CBS to KEEP MEDIUM ON THE AIR!!!!

PLEASE don’t cancel Medium. It is the only show I watch on tv because in my opinion, it’s the only one WORTH watching! Enough of the reality shows already. This show has been one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever watched on tv. For a tv show to hold my attention, it really has to be something special. The cast is incredible – Joe and Allison’s marriage is one of the most realistic marriages I’ve ever seen, and their family life is so endearing and a big reason I’ve enjoyed the show as well. The storylines hook you from… Read more »
Medium was skating on thin ice as soon as CBS cancelled Ghost Whisperer. I hate to see it go, but CBS shot themselves in the foot. Friday night was one of my favorite “lineup” nights: Ghost Whisperer followed by Medium. Now I have no reason whatsoever for tuning in to CBS on Friday nights. I guess the Sci-Fi channel will be getting my viewership on Friday nights from now on.
Medium has been one of my favorite shows! I admit, some of the episodes this year were not the best….that said, I don’t want it to be cancelled!
An idea though is to create a spinoff. With the success of the Twilight Series, why not do a show based on Ariel’s life in college? It could open up a dozen new story lines where her “gifts” can help and sometimes hurt at the same time. Plus, there could be a couple crimes, even potential suicides she can help prevent/solve…and mom could make occasional appearances.
