Last week, CBS gave full season orders to all five of its new shows. The network execs have now cut the episode order for the veteran Medium series. What’s going on? Is Medium next to be cancelled?
Starring Patrica Arquette, Medium premiered in 2005 on NBC. The series ran on the peacock network for five seasons until it was cancelled. Because CBS produces the drama and it’s a syndication success, the eye network picked it up for season six and paired it with compatible Ghost Whisperer. The latter was cancelled last May after a decline in ratings but Medium survived.
This season, Medium has seen a significant decline in viewership. It’s averaged just a 1.3 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 6.2 million viewers. That’s a drop of 35% in the demo when compared to the same number of weeks last fall.
Medium is currently the network’s lowest rated show, by far. Fridays are a tough night to draw an audience but a 1.3 average is still very low. CSI: NY, which airs at 9pm, is averaging a 1.8 rating.
Based on Medium’s poor ratings and the success of the other CBS programming, it’s not surprising that the network has cut the show’s episode order for season seven. The cast and crew will make just 13 episodes instead of the traditional 22 installments. You may remember that CBS did something similar with Numb3rs last season and cancelled it in the spring.
This represents Medium’s smallest season in its history and will almost surely will be the drama’s last. CBS will likely replace it on the schedule by midseason.
On the positive side, if this is indeed Medium’s final season, producers will presumably have enough time to give the series some kind of closure.
What do you think? Is it time for Medium to be cancelled or are you still hoping for season eight?

I really enjoy these shows . The relationships that Alison and daughters play are so real. The scenes are very enjoyable and means a lot. Shows the viewers they are important people set and can relate to Alison and whole family. Leave it on.
I feel sorry for the other millions of people not watching this show, b/c you are missing out!! Its trippy and cool. The ways Allison and her daughters relate to the deceased is so unique. I love it and will miss the show terribly.
Give the show some time. This season it has been so hard to find any of my favorite shows, the new seasons have started at non traditional times and channels. There is so much fluff and mindless programing. I miss the shows like Numbers and to lose Medium too will be a loss.
My whole family is upset about losing the medium. It is the best show on television. Please let us know where we could by a DVD collection of the entire series for my mother who got us all hooked on that show.Maybe another network can help keep it on the air. Let me know of any updates.
As a fellow intuitive medium, this show was the most real, down to earth portrayl of what actually happens in our everyday life. It showed how Allison’s life was never glammed up. She & her family had problems just like everybody else. I truely loved the smallest things that she & Joe would experience. It so much rang a bell . I just hope Lifetime Network will pick up the show and continue to keep one of the best shows still on the air. Do we really need another CSI, NCIS or whatever retread tired formula.
I Love Medium. Always have. The writing gets better and stronger with each season. Fantastic acting on the part of the cast as well. Please keep this show intact and on the air!!
I really enjoy this series, it takes the rather mysterious aspect of our existence and gives an alternate view of its inner workings about death and glimpses into what might happen afterwards. I believe that there are so many more episodes that could come and if producers are feelings that people are “losing interest” then perhaps is time for some gradual changes to occur. There is significant talk about character archs and how they change over a season or even over the course of a series, but what about the arch of the series itself? Although it is apparent that… Read more »
Over all … I’ve watched this show from the beginning… when it was on NBC … I was extreamley annoyed with NBC when they cancelled it. Very happy CBS picked it up and paired it with Ghost Whisper. Another show I enjoyed alot. The ONLY character I never could get in love with on this show was the middle daughter. Everytime she opened her mouth I always grabbed the remote to turn down the sound. But the rest of the show… I enjoyed it very much. The Arquette’s are a very talented family. I love all of them. While I’m… Read more »
Oh my gosh please do not cancel Medium!! It is the best show on t.v. ! There is no other show that can compare to the characters.
I have loved Medium for years but CBS just didn’t keep up the good writing. The writers and director let the dialogue get really annoying. Repeating the last word said to start the next sentence is super annoying after a while… after a while I get annoyed. (that’s what I mean). It’s the way Duvalis spoke and a couple others in the previous NBC version but now ALL of the characters speak the same way. I love the show enough to keep watching but I wish the director would change that. Let the characters say BUT and AND every once… Read more »
I really like the show and would hate to lose it. I look forward to watching it every Friday or else I DVR it for Saturday morning. It’s the only drama I watch. CSI–BLECH!
I think Medium is a great show I have watched it from the start and I would hate to see it get cancelled. Friday nights are a tough night for TV and honestly it the only thing I watch. After its done I turn to DVD’s or something I have on DVR. I will be bummed if it gets cancelled.
Please tell CBS how much you love the show and not to cancel it!!!

Medium is one of my favorite shows. I think the
quality of the show keeps getting better. It deserves
a full season.
Medium will be canceled, and I for one am a huge fan. It’s just its time! Thank God, CBS had the balls to take it. NBC dicked it over, but we at least got 35 more episodes!! So, that being said, will Medium end in December 2010 or January 2011? I hope they are the final two or three in January. Lucky, Allison’s brother is coming back in an episode in December. But, 7 seasons are quite well for a supernatural thriller/drama. Let’s just hope the ratings keep going up and if they do they may give it a full… Read more »
