Television history is filled with examples of TV shows that kept going after the loss of one of their lead performers. Sitcoms like Scrubs and That ’70s Show limped through one final season while Two and a Half Men and Cheers each ran for several more years. So, how will Mom do without Anna Faris? Will this CBS comedy be cancelled or renewed for season nine? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
The Mom TV series stars Allison Janney, Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner, and Kristen Johnston. Recovering addict Bonnie (Janney) must learn to adjust to life without her daughter and former-roommate, Christy (Faris), around. With a chaotic past behind her and a newly empty nest, Bonnie focuses on her marriage to her husband, Adam (Fichtner), and on what she wants to be now that she’s finally grown up. Now more than ever, Bonnie depends on the support of her friends, including wise Marjorie (Kennedy), wealthy and sometimes misguided Jill (Pressly), overly emotional Wendy (Hall), and her foster sister, Tammy (Johnston), who was recently released from prison. Through it all, these women help each other overcome their mistakes and stay sober in the face of whatever life throws their way.

*2/17/21 update: Mom is ending so there won’t be a ninth season for this CBS comedy series.
Mom has definitely been one of Chuck Lorre’s best creations (among his very many!) My husband is an alcoholic and this show hits him hard every time he watches an episode, (it has encouraged him to attend AA a few times) but yet makes him laugh to show how him how nonjudgmental this show has been written. Even though alcoholism is not a funny disease, the creator and writers along with other staff, know how to keep the seriousness of the disease and the struggles that go along with it, but yet still know how to add the comedy to… Read more »
I have known people with alcoholism, and I can’t believe some people would laugh at the show if they experienced it. It’s unbearable to watch shows that makes fun of peoples problems that affect their lives in others. Kinship laughs it seems like what CBS network lowers itself to to the lowest denominator of a persons psyche. Not everybody like garbage like this but it seems like people in the world today in the past few years seem like they were virtually watch anything on TV. Now that’s their prerogative, but the problem is that not everybody likes this genre… Read more »
No one is making fun of people’s real-life problems. This show, which is a sitcom, hence it has jokes, has done a great job of mixing in humor with seriousness to help people realize how dangerous substance abuse can be all while making it an entertaining show at the same time. I also think they’ve done it this way in order to show viewers that even after enduring the most difficult things in life, there is still hope – you’ll persevere and life will get better.
I think the show has actually gotten better without Ms. Faris. It’s as though the writers are trying harder. I enjoy it and will miss a season 9.
Mom is my favorite tv show & I’m saddened to hear season 9 will not be shown. I have watched the old shows over & over again on Hulu & could watch them non stop. I loved when the Tammy character appeared, I looked forward to Thursday’s & can ‘t believe it will is cancelled. A great show with or without Christie.
The Valentine’s show was precious with them all together at the table. There was less sarcasm going around. They do fine without Christie and it was great to see Wendy get some lines. Write her up a little, do more with the AA meetings and we’ll be good to go for another few years.
Keep it on
While I am disappointed to hear about the network’s decision to ax MOM–a show I really like–I can’t say I blame them–for the show has strayed far from the reason for its name. And the onus for saving the show for a 9th+ season lies with Chuck Lorre and the writers, not just the letter-writing people. While most of the focus of Mom has been on middle-aged ladies with substance-abuse issues, the reason for its name is because its central characters are a bunch of moms–specifically, a single matri-lineal family tree of single moms and their love-daughters: Bonnie, Christy, Violet,… Read more »
Tammy should have never been made a regular character. She has slowly taken over the show and brought it down to a much lower level of acting, timing and comedic talent. Her constant mugging has no nuance. All the other actors have had to adjust to her purely”sit commy” style. They lost the delicate mix of comedy/ drama that was so masterful for 7 seasons along with the writing.. We wonder if that may be one of the real reasons Christy is gone?
I don’t see this going anywhere without Anna Faris. She was the star of the show and without her this can’t last. Bonnie is too narcissistic and selfish to be “loved” as a main character. I have watched three of the new shows (8th season) and see no reason to watch any more. I do like the other characters but they need Christie.
Last year when I heard the news of Anna Faris’ sudden departure from the show, I was severely hurt, however, given the remaining cast and with a new season guaranteed, I remained optimistic. So far, with just 6 episodes aired since her exit, I have sadly come to the conclusion that Mom, which used to be my second love, I used to always be so thrilled when Thursday night came to watch a new episode, no longer has that spark it once did. Without Faris almost all the show’s magic is gone. It reminds me of the disaster that Two… Read more »
not funny anymore it has seen its day, the only way this show will be good again is if Anna Faris comes back otherwise even though this has been my favorite show for 7yrs it needs to be cancelled
I think they should write about bonnie having a relationship with her grandson in the seasons past the kids were just written off never finishing what happens between children and recovering parents Farris character never got her son back from his dad in the show she’s more worried about her love life then her kids I mean the oldest kid doesn’t forgive her but doesn’t blame her grandma either for her mom ending up the way she did there’s a lot of stories that were never approached about family and the family of AA and pit falls you pray your… Read more »
I did not like the episode when violet just dismissed chrissy like she ment nothing to her. Sure they bumped head from time to time, but there was still love between them and chrissy always had her back. How do you dismiss a person who worked so hard to change her life around like she did, trying to become a lawer, and yet she’s ok with the grandma? Dont make no sence to me. I always thought they would come back with an episode to correct that, but they never did. Shame on you writers. That episode was in my… Read more »
I miss Anna Ferris. The show is not the same without her and definitely not funny. Anna please come back. This show will not be funny without her. Mom was one of my favorite but not now. Bring Anna back.
My post was removed. I thought it said “Post Comment,” not write love letter. I did not attack anyone but merely offered my opinion.
