In 2009, both Southland and Medium were cancelled by NBC but were then saved by other networks. Three long-running shows were recently cancelled last month and it looked like each had a good shot of being saved as well.
A couple weeks later, Law & Order and Ghost Whisperer have been denied a second chance and now, The New Adventures of Old Christine has as well.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows a neurotic single mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who has a hard time juggling a relationship with responsibilities at home and work. Others in the cast include Hamish Linklater, Wanda Sykes, Trevor Gagnon, Clark Gregg, Emily Rutherfurd, Tricia O’Kelley, and Alex Kapp Horner.
The sitcom has been a moderate performer for CBS from the beginning and has ended up on the bubble each year. For the past two years, ABC has been ready to pick up the show if CBS dropped it. Those were in the days when ABC wasn’t having much luck finding successful sitcoms of their own.
When CBS cancelled Old Christine this year, the alphabet network wasn’t as interested anymore because ABC already has some successful sitcoms with several new ones waiting in the wings.
This season, Old Christine aired opposite ABC sitcoms and didn’t fare very well. As a result, the network has decided not to pick up the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom for season six.
The final episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine aired on May 12th on CBS. After five seasons and 88 episodes, there won’t be a final episode to wrap up the series.
On the positive side, reruns will begin airing on Lifetime and on local stations across the country in the fall.
What do you think? Should ABC have picked up Old Christine for season six? How would you have ended the show?

I am shocked and extremely saddened about the news that “The New Adventures of Old Christine” has been canceled. Just another wonderful sitcom which will probably be replaced by a crappy reality show. Also, I do enjoy ABC’s Wednesday lineup, but none are as gut-busting funny as “Christine.” BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!
The new christine was a great show with funny stories. The relationships Christine had with her family and friends were quirky and so funny to watch. There is still so much that show and its characters have to give. CBS was foolish to cancel it. I wish ABC would pick it up.
I liked the show and thought it was good. I’m going to miss it.
Of course they would cancel this show. I mean it’s a great show and the dumb nuts at CBS cancelled one of their top rated shows Ghost Whisperer and ABC would rather pick up stupid shows like scrubs instead of good shows like these.
I love this show! I’m very sad to see that it was canceled and that ABC isn’t going to pick it up.
I think that its hard for a man to identity with this show. I think that Julia is extremely talented but I the show’s premise just doesn’t appeal to me. I feel like I’m one step away from watching a comedy on the LifeTime channel.
Cancelling “The New Adventures of Old Christine” is a mistake. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a fabulous actress! ABC should reconsider picking up this show, and should definitely dump that awful Cougar Town (crappy show, insulting title).
Cancelling The New Adventures of Old Christine is the worst idea EVER!!! This was the wittiest, gut busting show on TV. I personally think the humor was too avant garde for many people to get, which would explain the ratings. I hope that ABC reconsiders & picks this show up.
bull****
There have to be better and funnier shows out there somewhere… a show where all the characters are funny and likable like Cheers, Seinfeld – shows where you can’t wait to watch from 1 week to the next. This show was so-so, and not very funny the few times I tried to watch it. Just wasn’t funny…
The New Adventures of Old Christine, It cancelled what were you thinking? That was the funnest show in a long time.
On another point, ever since the TV Guide went to the large issues, there are at least a half a dozen or more mistakes in their prime time listings every week. I have called them and complained to no avail. I have been a loyal susscriber for over 40 years and once again bigger is not always better!
My thought is, you have a great line up on wednesday night of which I watch religiously, is there no other night to put new christine? You have 6 other days to work with. Just saying.
JUST WENT TO ABC WEBSITE AND THEY HAVE A LAUGH ON SITE WHERE THEY SHOW THE MIDDLE, MODERN FAMILY AND COUGAR TOWN AS A NIGHT OF LAUGHS BUT WOULDN’T NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE BE THE PERFECT LEAD IN TO THE NIGHT OF LAUGHS…..IF ONLY EVERYONE COULD FLOOD ABC WITH TAKING NEW ADVENTURES OVER TO THEIR NIGHT OF LAUGHS!!!!!!
My wife and I thought this show (Christine), was hilarious. We watched it every week and with all the other sitcoms surviving, how did this one fall through the cracks………oh that’s right……CBS moved it. And guess what?…… they’re doing the same thing to “Big Bang Theory”, and then they’ll sit around wonder why the ratings tumbled on ANOTHER good sit-com. Any time you move something, ratings usually fall. So….CBS…….KNOCK IT OFF!!!!!!!
