In 2009, both Southland and Medium were cancelled by NBC but were then saved by other networks. Three long-running shows were recently cancelled last month and it looked like each had a good shot of being saved as well.
A couple weeks later, Law & Order and Ghost Whisperer have been denied a second chance and now, The New Adventures of Old Christine has as well.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows a neurotic single mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who has a hard time juggling a relationship with responsibilities at home and work. Others in the cast include Hamish Linklater, Wanda Sykes, Trevor Gagnon, Clark Gregg, Emily Rutherfurd, Tricia O’Kelley, and Alex Kapp Horner.
The sitcom has been a moderate performer for CBS from the beginning and has ended up on the bubble each year. For the past two years, ABC has been ready to pick up the show if CBS dropped it. Those were in the days when ABC wasn’t having much luck finding successful sitcoms of their own.
When CBS cancelled Old Christine this year, the alphabet network wasn’t as interested anymore because ABC already has some successful sitcoms with several new ones waiting in the wings.
This season, Old Christine aired opposite ABC sitcoms and didn’t fare very well. As a result, the network has decided not to pick up the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom for season six.
The final episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine aired on May 12th on CBS. After five seasons and 88 episodes, there won’t be a final episode to wrap up the series.
On the positive side, reruns will begin airing on Lifetime and on local stations across the country in the fall.
What do you think? Should ABC have picked up Old Christine for season six? How would you have ended the show?

I thought this was one of the most consistently funny shows on television. I’d rather have seen it replace The Big Bang Theory on Monday with the rest of the hilarious line-up. ABC should have certainly found a spot for it—maybe on it’s Wednesday night line-up instead of Cougartown.
Old Christine if not one but was my favorite show. It was great seeing this cast interact with each other. They played off each other so well that I found my self laughing all the time. I wish it was picked up – ABC could have at least tried to see how well it would do before they said no. CBS was probably not the best place for the show. Most of the shows I watched are on other networks. I will miss Old Christine! 🙁
This is SO upsetting as Christine was my absolute favorite show! And to think they run that god-awful show the Middle in that timeslot with back-to-back episodes of stupidity. The Middle should have gotten the boot. Patricia Heaton and the rest of the cast, including the kids, are just terrible, and the show sucks big time. Oh, how I wish the line-up were back-to-back episodes of Christine, followed by Modern Family and Cougar Town. Now THAT’s a FANTASTIC night of television!
I thought New Christine was one of the funniest shows, alongside The Office and 30 Rock. Cannot believe it’s been cancelled. Who made this decision….and why?
In my opinion, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one the THE most talented actresses. The range and nuances of expressions on her face seem to be limitless. She can say it all without opening her mouth. I hope CBS……or ABC reconsider.
I think it’s ironic that after the show gets cancelled, Julia Louis Dreyfus gets nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. AGAIN!!! She won this award in 2006 & has been nominated for it every year after, including 2010. Am I still Pissed that the show is cancelled??? Of course I am!
This has to have been one of the funnier sitcoms on tv in recent years. I can’t believe it’s not coming back!!? I really think ABC could do Christine justice…..think about it ABC!!
we’re so sorry to hear this! we were even looking forward to the reruns this summer. we never considered it would be cancelled. PLEASE PICK IT UP ABC!!!
Seriously you people that are out there claiming that you know what we the television viewers want to see. W e would love to see more shows like Christine. all these young kids watch these days is this reality crap. News flash that is not reality. You want reality put it on FOX NEWS. That’s real life. Christine was one of the best shows on television. Shame on you for not even giving the fans of her show to have closure. You owe that a crew a little more respect than that. Seriuosly you suck.
I love the show. I hope they don’t cancel the show. It is one of the funniest shows on TV. It is a disappointment to think they will keep some of the dumb shows and let a show with such hilarious characters go!!
I am so sad that no one is picking up this show. I thought it was the funniest show on TV. It was the only show that actually made me laugh out loud. And each character was funny in their own right–a true ensemble, like Cheers.
Maybe my husband and I didn’t get it, but we didn’t ever think it was that funny. Maybe in the beginning it was but later it was a drag for us.
ya you had to have a sense of humor to get this show..*hint* *hint*
I love the show… They shouldn’t have cancelled it…!!!!!!!!!!!! She made me laugh as a crazy…
i don’t get it!!!! i love this show, it is really funny and not typical,…..i don’t care where they show it, i just want another seasons, it is really a comedy series where you forget your peoblems and just relax and laugh….:(
First and foremost, I don’t think CBS should have cancelled this show as you have shows like Rules Of Engagement that should have been cancelled long time ago, why is CBS turning into the “NEW” Fox? Very disappoited
Me and my husband thought the show was so funny. It was a great comic relief. I just can’t believe that they didn’t pick it back up. ABC already has some of my favorite shows, and Christine would be just make it all the better. What’s wrong with the people on CBS not picking it back up!! What a mistake!!!
