The Class aired its last first run episode Monday night on CBS, right according to schedule. The New Adventures of Old Christine will replace it in the 8:30pm timeslot starting March 12th. Does this mean that The Class has been cancelled? No. At least, not yet.
The Class debuted on Monday, September 18, 2006 on CBS. The sitcom revolves around a group of 28-year-olds who were part of the same third grade class 20 years before. After being reunited by Ethan (Jason Ritter), the former classmates begin to get to know each other once again and become intertwined. The series also stars Lizzy Caplan, Heather Goldenhersh, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sean Maguire, Jon Bernthal, Andrea Anders and Lucy Punch.
The series, created by the co-creator of Friends David Crane and his partner Jeffrey Klarik (Mad About You), had been the subject of a bidding war by several networks. It premiered at 8pm (a difficult slot for a new show) and attracted an under-whelming 7.6 million households. Viewership dropped for the next two weeks to an average of 6.1 million. CBS moved it to 8:30, switching places with How I Met Your Mother and the ratings haven’t really improved, averaging under six million households weekly.
The Class has gone through some challenges behind-the-scenes as well. Realizing that the main cast of eight former classmates (combined with many recurring characters) was unwieldy, the producers sought to refocus the show on the characters’ romantic relationships. As a result, they limited the recurring role appearances and wanted to make series regular Lucy Punch (reporter Holly Ellenbogen) a recurring character as well. Punch declined and subsequently left the series. She was removed from the opening credits after episode 13. Though her effeminate husband Perry (Sam Harris) has appeared, Holly’s absence hasn’t been addressed.
If you’re counting, you know that only 19 episodes of The Class have aired. Though it’s an unusual number for a TV season, that’s all there are. CBS gave the series an initial order for 13 episodes and then ordered only six more in November.
Will The Class return for a second season? CBS isn’t expected to announce its plans until the “network upfronts” in May when they announce their Fall schedule. Right now the prospects for a second season of The Class don’t look good.
Right now, CBS has a two-hour block of four sitcoms. Rules of Engagement, which debuted last month, has done extremely well holding onto Two and a Half Men’s typical 10+ million households audience. Before going on hiatus, The New Adventures of Old Christine was attracting solid numbers and is expected to do well when it returns this Monday. How I Met Your Mother is the weakest show in the group audience-wise but has consistently outperformed The Class. Right now, there’s no good reason for CBS to dump any of those other shows, which essentially leaves no room for a second season of The Class.
Is there hope? Well, if CBS decides to add some sitcoms on another night then that would create an opening in the schedule. Right now, though their schedule is overflowing with crime procedural and reality shows, they generally get great ratings. CBS could also order a second season of The Class and use them to replace Christine or Mother reruns mid-season.
On the upside, the series won the People’s Choice Award for Best New Comedy. CBS generally seems to like the show and has faith in the creative team. The final decision will likely have to do with how the rest of their new Fall schedule shapes up. Will Kat and Ethan get together? Will Ritchie marry Lina? Will Duncan and Nicole get back together? Will Kyle have more to do than pal around with Ethan? Stay tuned!
Say NO NO NO to canceling The Class. It is hilarious!!!! I’m hooked.
i liked the show it was funny so guess what they take it off i watched cbs all the time and if your going to take all the good shows off i guess i will have to find other thanks to do thanks
The Class is such a nice refreshing comedy. We have looked forward to it every week. Now it is not on and we haven’t watched any of the other comedies on Monday nights since. It was the one new show we couldn’t wait to enjoy. Since the number of new episodes of all shows are lower each season, it was nice to have something other than repeat after repeat after repeat or drama after drama after drama to watch on primetime television.
I think The Class is one of the best new sitcoms. Everyone I know absolutley loved it and hope for its return.
The Class is too good, I never missed any eposides that premierd every monday.
Oh come on, why would CBS pull it instead of putting it into a better time slot if they’re so concerned? And I don’t mean opposite Idol or Desperate Housewives, I mean a REAL shot. The Class never fails to make me laugh out loud every week – something that never happens to me with a TV show. It’s awesome and I will be furious if its cancelled. Come on, CBS, get your act together!
REALITY TV HAS RUINED TV FOR PEOPLE ME WHO LOVE TO SIT ON THE COUCH AT NIGHT AFTER A LONG DAY AND JUST WANT TO LAUGH. THE CLASS WAS A GREAT SHOW. SORRY HOLLY IS GONE BUT IT WAS STILL SOMETHING I LOOKED FORWARD TO EVERY MONDAY NIGHT. THEY HAVE TAKEN PERFECTLY GOOD SHOWS LIKE, RELATED, ED, PROVIDENCE ETC. AND FILLED THE TV WITH HORRIBLE REALITY SHOWS. ITS SICKENING WHAT TV HAS COME TO. PLEASE BRING BACK THE CLASS…
Please, please, oh Puleeze don’t let “The Class” be cancelled! It started off kinda slow, but the characters were just becoming defined and then it was GONE!
I love the Class so much that for the first time ever I’ve written to a television station! I’ve requested CBS consider keeping it in their line up. Monday night’s will not be the same without it.
The Class is a wonderful comedy. All the characters are different making us relate to many of thier situations. This show must go on!!!!!! I am thirty and my friends get together every Monday for a “How I Met Your Mother” and “The Class” pizza night. We all want it to stay around. Great writing and actors!!!!
The Class is one of the funniest shows to come out in a long time. It would be a shame if a lame boring “friends” wannabe show like How I met your Mother stayed on the air and The Class was taken off. Get rid of all those tired reality shows and lets watch more great comedy.
It has been a long time since I have laughed out loud consistently at a sitcom…The Class brought laughter back to our Monday night…and with TIVO I have shared it with family and friends. My wife and I LOVE it!
Let Sam Harris sing on the class and watch the ratings go up up up….sensational vocals. and, he has a lot of dedicated fans. Please do not cancel a great show…we can do without all these reality shows as far as im concerned the reality are for people with lettle or no talent or those performers who are has beens…
I know my opinion probably won’t mean much but…I LOVE THE CLASS!!!! I hope it doesn’t cancel. Another great sitcom that might be canceled…just great.
wow you know how to break up family night. Why do you cancel all the good shows. My husband and I love the class and never missed an episode. He even went to work late so he could catch the ending. Why get rid of such a great show. Give me the old line up and get rid of Rules. Don’t cancel a great show
