WEEK No. 18:
During the week of January 17, 2011, ABC’s “Modern Family” finished as the No. 1 regular scripted program in Adults 18-49, despite competing head to head against Fox’s “American Idol” premiere on Wednesday. In fact the Network had a number of standout performance against “Idol.” Opposite Wednesday’s 2-hour “Idol” opener, ABC’s “The Middle” and “Modern Family” each marked their highest-ever numbers against any telecast of the Fox program. Opposite “Idol’s” Thursday premiere from 8:00-9:00 p.m., Winter “Wipeout” produced big year-over-year growth for ABC with the Net’s top results in 6 years against the opening hour of any “American Idol” Night 2 premiere – since “Lost” on 1/19/05. With “Primetime: What Would You Do? and “20/20” on Friday night, ABC claimed TV’s Top 2 newsmagazine telecasts for the week in both Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 39% currently, from 35% at the same point in 2010. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

I don’t think it is the problem of the show, because you have fired several excellent writer of the show and changed the role the several characters. And most importantly, you changed the show on Friday when people seldom watch TV. The… Read more »

Hunted down, killed cupid and broke my heart. Networks decided to cancel 90 percent of the shows I was watching. So I’m switching to Netflix, all the movie you can watch for $9.99. I never in all my years of television seen such drastic chopping of shows. I found they are not discriminate on which type of show I’m watching, rather it to be Sitcoms, Drama or… Read more »
