As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?
Please bring the show back.
I am so sick of reality TV crap. I hope there is a way to continue this show. I think canceling The A.D. The Bible Continues series in the the first year was a mistake. Some shows need a second season to really catch on. Airing a series in the spring to early summer was also not the best timing. I am sure the ratings would’ve been excellent if aired in January or February.
It figures. The network mucky-mucks don’t know how to deal with real quality vs. the inane
stupidity that is regularly shown. This was real quality drama, intense stuff. The episodes really stuck with me during the week, and I always looked forward to each new episode.
It’s too bad that no one in network TV has the fortitude to raise the bar. Not all of us can afford cable or satellite. Guess I’ll by the DVD and be glad for the episodes that were shown.
I loved this mini series. I hate NBC dropped season 2. Mark and Roma need to find a way to get us viewers a season 2. I loved the fact that there were characters of color unlike most bible movies made.
Hello.I’m hoping NBC will put it back on ,I loved the show, it brought new light to God and Jesus, and everything, It has made a change in me ,now I’m trying to find my way into a new life, hopefully with Jesus by my side, there was alot I didn’t know, I lost my mother at 9 and really don’t have a family thou I long for one everyday, I’ve been waiting for the show to come back on. ,so I looked it up just now to find just because of ratings u drop the show about faith and love,… Read more »
I loved the show! I really missed it after the last episode. I just wanted more. I found the series to be very informative and appreciated the history collected from sources where the Bible is not clear. The sets and costumes were phenomenal; the acting was tops. It is truly a disappointment that the series will not continue.
i am so upset that the series was cancelled! I looked forward to seeing it every week! I even went to my bible to read more about the disciples and what they went through and I’m ashamed to say that I don’t read my bible as much as I should! Seems like every time there is a good show somebody cancels it! There are no shows with values anymore!
I hope I can find this on another channel, probably cable somewhere!
I would have loved to see a season two on that TV station or any other station for that matter. I watched every week faithfully, talked about it to coworkers, and was excited to see the next weeks episode. I find it sad that people are not excited to hear or spread things that have to deal with the Lord. There is so many corrupt and demonic tv shows on the tv now and they thrive season after season.Thank God I recorded every episode on my dvr so I can watch it and hopefully another station will pick up a… Read more »
I enjoyed watching this and hope to see the show continued in some form. I would watch on either DVD or a pay channel. TV does not carry enough faith based shows and we certainly need more.
I am very disappointed that this series isn’t continuing on NBC. I will watch this and more wherever and whenever it appears.
Would absolutely watch on dvd or online can’t wait!
I will definitely want to see more episodes. This series shows how remarkable it is that we even know who Jesus was, let alone have a religion to follow him more than 2000 years later,. How many of us today have the faith of Peter or any of the other disciples? How many of us would suffer the way they did to spread the Word of God? It definitely makes me think.
We know who Zeus is also, who is much older than Jesus and pagans still worship him.
Would watch on DVD or/and online
The main “problem” for me was the casting……altho. Peter was good, Caiaphas, John, Simon & Paul (Saul) just didn’t suit or act out their roles well. Thankfully some God-glorifying special effects (sadly missing in the original & superior The Bible mini-series) helped save the day.
if they do a season 2 on dvd I would watch on dvd
