As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?
I will NOT watch anything on NBC since they’ve cancelled this beautiful family show. Seems they will air nudity, violence, homosexuality or whatever it takes to make a $, but when it comes to good wholesome shows that the entire family can watch and learn about the Bible, they cancell it. Shame, shame, shame on you NBC. I hope your ratings suffer dramatically for this wrong decision!!! God don’t like ugly, you’ll reap what you sow!!
NBC can’t show nudity. What’s wrong with homosexuality?
I feel this was an injustice. This was another way to try to stop the Word of God from going forth. If I were NBC I would think twice before I cancel another series like this one and put on crime murder and sex shows. This does nothing for the morality for our society.
AD the Bible Continues was OUTSTANDING!!!!
I thought fnally a reason to watch NBC. I actually planned my Sunday so that I was on the couch on time to watch, then NBC cancels the show (ugh!!!!) Seeing premiers for new shows promoting sex, drugs, violence on all of the network is sad.
We completely agree!
I would bye season 2 on dvd. It’s an important story.
That is a bummer NBC will not do it I would pay to see it on DVD I would watch it do whatever it’s all because it’s Chris and they’re taking God out of everything in America
Yes I would pay to see it on DVD or whatever that’s a bummer that NBC is not going on with it this figures just because Christian program that really sucks
I will do what it takes to see season 2
I will definitely watch it..i enjoy watching it.I was searching for season but now i came to know that season 2 was cancelled and i was very sad..i hope season 2 will be release soon.
This is a great series! Australia loved it and we think it should continue. Get the big mega churches to back the complete work as this is why the church folks give, to spread the word. Do we expect the world to do the work of the church?
I was looking forward to watching the 2ndseason, only to find out it was cancelled. They should put it out on DVD instead of making us wait til the online channel is up.
I love it!
We completely agree!
So sad that the second season of the series is canceled.
Heartbreaking… I will watch online when it is available. Not a fan of NBC and paid to watch via VUDU.
Totally enjoyed the series and would love to see it returned .
This was an excellent show and so sad it was cancelled. I was really looking forward to seeing the next series. I learned so much about the Bible and its history from this show as it really put into light and order of the events of that time than just reading it. I’ve always found it difficult to follow the Bible as an order of history as it’s not written as one continuous story. This really put everything into picture and made you anxious to see what happened in the next episode. I will see it however it is shown… Read more »
I really enjoyed the series I looked forward to watching it on tv. As being a religious school teacher it makes it a lot easier to see it on screen and to understand what Jesus actually went threw then to be able to to use that in my call was amazing . So I am m disappointed……..
I am very disappointed to learn that season 2 of the bible series has been cancelled. My husband and I looked very forward to watching it each week.
My whole family gathered to watch this show and we embrace the history of how Jesus lived and died.. We preferred watching this than meaningless show that represented a society that lacks value and respect for self and God!!! Please reconsider a 2nd season..
