As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?
I loved this series. After episode 1, I was hooked. Unfortunately programming like this is not what the majority of the public wants. However it is what is needed. The importance of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and the events that followed is more beneficial than any of the destructive programming of sex, violence, scandal, etc. Hopefully season 2 can relaunch in the future.
Make season 2 I loved these shows so inspiring and what we want to see not the garbage you show on tv..
I was really shocked to hear that they cancelled the second season. The show made my eyes wet. It was so touching and moving. I really loved and enjoyed it. Please bring it back
This series was awesome, but I am not surprised about the cancelling of the show. People want to feed into their minds of sex drugs and murder, not a show to convict them and make them feel accountable. It’s a shame.
Don’t believe the ratings. .This is what families need to watch on TV. They rather air evil and violence. It’s not about what people what to watch it’s about doing the right thing. ..What a shame…TV has gone to the devil.
Awesome comment. Television has gone to the devil. NBC (others also) should do the right thing.
Was looking forward to the second season. Loved the show so much it made me want to find and read more on the book of Acts and more about Peter and Paul.
Great series, always wanted to know what happen after our Lord went to Heaven. It was getting really good the history of it all and the network took it off the air I like to see it come back.
I bought the dvd’s because something else was on TV I was watching. I hope they have more. Very good series. Plan on buying next DVD’S if they make more.
My husband and I really enjoyed the series, we looked forward every week to see the latest in the Bible stories. I really miss the show and hope it returns.
A.D. The Bible Continues was an excellent series. I loved being able to watch it with my whole family. I’m really disappointed that they’re not making Season 2.
I am absolutely disappointed that this show was cancelled. It was captivating and even my daughter who was 6 years old enjoyed it. I hope NBC would reconsider their decision.
Absolutely loved it and will watch it wherever it is broadcast
In a lost hopeless world , The Bible is a tremendous inspiration and accurate portrayal of the reason for our hope.-Jesus. Strange in 57 years I have never been polled about TV shows.
Yes I would definitely watch season 2. I thought it was a great series and recorded all episodes so I would not miss a one.
