As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?
Sooo disappointed!!! We loved the show!!! Very upset 🙁
Loved this mini series……so disappointed it won’t be back. Yes if a second season is made I would definitely purchsse. Cast was awesome!!!! Well done.
So disappointed, finally something on Sunday so powerful besides sports.
I am extremely disappointed. I was looking forward to season two.
I loved the series and was looking forward to season 2. I am sorry NBC cancelled.
I’ve been waiting for season 2. Too bad they cancelled the show. Looking forward for season 2 to be available online. Would also love to have this on dvd.
I would watch Season 2 and on and on. I prefer DVD
I will watch a season 2 and on and on, but I prefer DVD
I would love to watch it online or on dvd also … it’s a sad sad news that it was cancelled … but we have hope
I would love to watch it online and I would pay for the DVd also ! My husband and I loved AD and would constantly be looking at each other nodding our heads in approval at the biblical genius interwoven with historical fact and fiction. We are disappointed it was pulled from NBC but in all honesty we don’t even have cable TV so we were unable to support the show in that way anyhow. Our first time viewing was actually from a purchase from Amazon. Here’s to season 2 coming out through another avenue besides NBC. Cheers
This series was a weekly favorite for my family. I am incredibly disappointed that NBC cancelled this show. In our opinion, it created great diversity in the television offerings we had available. I sincerely hope the 2nd series is aired on another network that clearly appreciates its value.
NBC please continue with season 2 of this wonderful series. It kept my family and I engaged, and we genuinely looked forward to watching each and every episode. Roma and Mark, I commend you for creating such quality programming and pray somehow it continues to grow in a way we could never imagine.
I am sorry that it was not renewed, I would pay to watch season 2
Very disappointed – our family has loved this show. Studying ancient cultures and civilizations – it’s so rich in history and beliefs– and a clean show I can let my children watch
Such a sad move from
NBC- Perhaps a different move to improve
Ratings if that’s what was needed- ?? BUT- to cancel outright. So disappointed –
I want to see all of the story! All the way to Revelations!! Go Mark and Roma y’all have people who are hungry for more! God Bless!!
