As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?
I can not believe they canceled it! I’ve been waiting & waiting for it to come back on. I had no idea. It was such a wonderful series, & I’m not a typical religious type person. Not that I’m not a believer, I am. I just could be more dedicated and disciplined than I am. I am very disappointed in this, I was looking forward to it. I actually thought it was pretty cool that a network would take the time to put information, such as the bible into a series. Be able to come up with a script that… Read more »
Hate to see something so positive get cancelled.
I m very disappointed to hear that this got cancelled.. My family and I were learning more and more of our Lord Jesus Christ!!! I have teenagers and they enjoyed watching this show… Very sad to see something so meaning get let go
i really don’t know what to say .. the way you portrayed season 1 was outstanding and it helped me and my family to renew our minds towards Christ .. its sad to here you have cancelled the further series…. We just want you to focus your minds towards one thing…. “that is soul matters…. let it be one soul but it matters….” i don’t know the technicality what you all might be facing for cancelling the series….. But we will always remember you in our prayers for GOD to provide you the Grace to start your project once more… Read more »
It’s very sad that nbc prefers to air sinful shows but not one that can change someone’s life. This is why I’m boycotting them!
Disappointed, but not surprised. I have the first 2 DVDs and can hardly wait to buy this one as well. Thank you Mark and Roma……you tried.
It’s sad the series was canceled. Love the first season. Was looking forward to the second. Will b looking for it on another channel, theater, or DVD.
I’m actually upset that they cancelled it. Due to the fact that I was in the phase of emotionally enjoying toward the end without realizing until it went straight back to the top menu.. Can they like… Please continue it.. Though I may not be as important.. Loved all the bible series. “It is the only way, the truth and the life”
All the main channels suck, except CBS, I watch that channel the most. They should put AD: The Bible Continues on TNT, or A&E, or ever USA. I’d watch it on ant channel.
Love the first season. I was looking foward to see the 2nd season. So sad about the cancellation!!! Hope the producers finds a way to continue with it.
I would definitely want to see a second season. Today everything is about money not morals, which is why NBC cancelled it. It was one of the few shows on TV that my kids and I could sit and watch together. Its so sad that society is all about sex and violence instead of something wholesome that we can all learn from.
It was a great series. I don’t know what NBC is thinking.
Both of the series were/are excellent. Please continue the series. We will definitely watch it again and buy it like we have the first two. Bless you for making it!
Please continue A.D SERIES. It’s very very good
This show was so good! Of course it was cancelled, it is the story of Jesus. What else did I expect nowadays? Stupid NBC. I was spreading the word last year to everyone of how good the show was. It was so captivating. I do hope season 2 will be shown somewhere. I would definitely watch it and pay for it. Stupid, stupid NBC.
