As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?
I didn’t realize we had access to these Christian Educational Shows. Loved it!!! Please continue the story. The world needs to know more and understand more! I can’t wait to watch all the Christian shows I have on netflix. Thank you!
The show should not have been cancelled. It was very well scripted. Netflix can also be included If possible for continuation.
I would also like to express that the current cast has done a magnificent job and if it does air online please use the same people. My heart was so blessed by the performance.
I was very disappointed to hear that the show had cancelled when it comes online I will defiantly watch it. I also hope that it comes out on blue ray because I would love to add it to my collection. I already have the Bible, and Son of God, and A.D. as well. I would love to have the second season.
Very disappointed to hear the 2nd series of this great show has been cancelled. I thoroughly enjoyed every episode. All the actors were superb and the sets and costumes were very authentic and well designed. Hopefully the story can be continued somehow in the future.
This show is amazing and it has enhanced my faith and has really gotten me to think deeper in my spiritual walk. PLEASE do a 2nd season!!! There are so many pointless shows out there in the world, this one holds value, quality and truth! I love the way it was done and all the characters. It needs to come back only for season two but even More!
This was a terrible choice. I am very disappointed that NBC cancelled this. I am only now watching on Netflix but was deeply moved by the work. The people that produced this work deserve to finish it after such a brilliant job. Although I will have a hard time if the cast is not the same. I will be waiting.
I really enjoyed the Rona & Mark’s production of “The Bible, the epic miniseries (on blu-ray), and continuing with A. D. The Bible Continues. The way it ended, so abruptly leaving so much more to say and show, was devastating and disappointing. . . . Though we have the Bible to read, many of the events were portrayed so well in these productions, we just need to see it to the end and not be left hanging. I would watch it on TV, or Netflix, or Amazon Prime Video, or I would buy it on Blu-ray. I really want to… Read more »
Very dissapointed that there is not a second season. This is one of the best shows discribing the times and lives of the Apostoles. The writing, directing, story line were top notch.
I just watched season 1, and it was amazing. I’m crushed there is no season 2.
I think it the series was amazing. The casting was brilliant. My 14 year old son and I watched together, totally wrapt. It was so good to have something biblical to watch together. We were very disappointed to learn that the second season was cancelled.
Uhhhhh….. what the heck, just binged watch AD kingdom and empire on Netflix to only finish up canceled show? Seriously NBC?
This series of heart opening shows have made me want to share the news of Jesus Christ with others. Please pray for me in this new journey that I will take and for Jesus Christ to give me the words to say. More of this series may be an inspiration to others too. Give more time for more people to know that this series in on t.v. and Netflix. We need more shows like these!
I love the show. it is sad if the second season is not release. I have read the Bible and I know how it ends but it is great to see it on a movie. I will watch all the seasons that can be shown on Netflix.
