For the first time since the 2008 writers strike, veteran crime drama CSI won’t have a full season of episodes. CBS has reportedly decided to cut season 15’s order from 22 to 18 installments.
The original CSI continues to follow Las Vegas crime scene investigators as they try to solve bizarre cases. This season’s castmates are Ted Danson, Elisabeth Shue, George Eads, Jorja Fox, Eric Szmanda, Robert David Hall, Wallace Langham, David Berman, Elisabeth Hamois, and Jon Wellner.
The ratings are understandably down year-to-year, thanks to CSI’s move to Sunday nights when start-times often get pushed thanks to football over-runs. Still, the numbers aren’t bad compared to previous year’s timeslot occupants.
The episode trim is supposedly due to the network having too much programming waiting in the wings. New series CSI: Cyber will take over the Sundays at 10pm timeslot later in the season. The network also has the seventh (and final) season of The Mentalist and Vince Gilligan’s new series Battle Creek.
What do you think? Are you still watching the original CSI? Do you think this is a bad sign for the show’s future or just a case of limited timeslots.
I would rather see CSI:LV than football, or even The Good Wife. There are 4 days of football on prime time and for those who aren’t fond of tv sports, like myself, I just cut off the tv. Or go to PBS. Bring it back. Start football on Sunday earlier. I don’t care about sport commentators. Give me CSI.
This is my favorite show. I believe the cast changes have kept it fresh. The Season is already short and I am disappointed at the reduced number of episodes . I hope the studio continues to renew this series.
I’ve been concerned about CSI since the 15th season began. The episodes have been weak, starting with the writing which has been pedestrian at best. Plots from this season have been a reworking of plots from earlier seasons. Have they run out of ideas or do we have new writers. Even Nick and Sarah seemed to be sleep walking through their scenes. Now I learn that CBS has cut their episode order to 18. Regardless what the company line is I think this is the end of my all time favorite crime drama and it stinks. CSI has made billions… Read more »
Nooooooooooooooooooooo……….!!!!!!!!!!! And why should time slots matter anymore? Doesn’t just about everybody have a DVR??? I think the show is more enjoyable with Danson at the helm.
Actually no we don’t have a DVR. Not enough good shows to warrant purchasing one.
It doesn’t matter if you have a DVR in San Antonio, they just cut it out all together.
I, knew it when they moved it to Sunday’s (the kiss of death for any show) that this was going to happen, again leave it to CBS to stay in true form of jacking up everything.
I miss Miami most but I would take CSI that is on now better than nothing but why must our shows with smut outlast the ones with substance fall those obtuse cartoons are horrible and Simpsons should have been gone long ago archer is even worse
“For the first time in CSI history, the veteran crime drama won’t have a full season of episodes.” — It should be noted that “CSI” didn’t have a full season of episodes during the 2007-08 season (its eighth) due to the Writers’ Guild strike during that season. And another note: Paul Guilfoyle left “CSI” at the end of last season (its 14th).
Thanks for the note. I forgot about that.
Let it go…both NY and Miami were so much better! I can’t stand Ted Danson (such a letdown after Grissom)! The old blonde is annoying too!!
I agree on a couple of points: – Grissom will always be almost everyone’s favourite. – I loved CSI NY – Gary Sinise is a fantastic actor and the rest of the cast were great too! – I have always found Elizabeth Shue a bit annoying (in anything)! – However, I like Ted Danson’s character and I think he acts it well. I love Nick Stokes, Greg Sanders and especially Sara Sidle (am so glad she came back) and David Hodges. – I hope this CSI continues on – Forensic and crime program’s are my favs. – If it is… Read more »
I agree w/some of this but certainly not all. I couldn’t stand Catherine Willows and you saw how long her latest show lasted. I love Ted Danson, too. More human than Grissom ever was and way better than the last guy they booted out. Glad Sara came back, too.
Annnnd, I did enjoy CSI NY, too… wish they’d give Gary Sinise another show. Also, bring back BRASS! And yes replace the LOL… “old blonde.”
Fair enough Rose, just one thing – I’m not sure what age you are but did you ever see ‘China Beach’ – set I think during the Vietnam War from the perspective of the American woman there through the conflict? It ran from 1988-1991 and starred Dana Delany and Robert Picardo (an awesome actor). Marg Helgengerger (Catherine Willows) was in it and she was fantastic playing the in house evacuation hospital prostitute!
This could very well be the end for CSI but let’s hope it won’t be renewed for a 16th season.
This show has long overrun its welcome, by a decade or more.
Well it’s safe to say we all like Grissom – he was first, he was excentric, he was clever and he fell in love. I have DVD’s of all the seasons so get a dose of Grissom every so often! But I still think the show is great and am sad to see them cut down the episodes. I also wonder if they take into account the ratings in other countries. I watched faithfully in New Zealand and again now I am in Canada. I also wonder if ratings include (not sure how) the many many people who record the… Read more »
The Nielsen ratings are a sampling of people who are watching the show on TV. If you’re part of the Nielsen program, your viewership is counted, if not it’s not. The ratings are used to estimate how many people saw the commercials (which pay for the shows to be produced).
Thanks for the speedy reply. I did think it would be about the commercials. Thanks
If you’re not a Nielsen family, I tell people to watch the shows online. We know that they’re tracking that viewership directly, though it is less valuable to them.
I love CSI have watched from the beginning. Also miss NY. Whatever nite they put CSI on I will DVR it. Also looking forward to the new one. either way I do hope they keep CSI and look forward to the new one.
I see some others had made comments about DB vs Grissom and I share their sentiment. DB is great but I liked Grissom and there have been hints of him since Jorja Fox has reprized her role. I would love for him to come back if only for a an episode or two. I think they could squeeze an arc in their. I too enjoyed the other CSI series and was especially sad to see CSI:NY leave the airways. At least they had a good final episode. The episode reduction does make me think the writing is on the wall.… Read more »
I preferred Grissom over DB but DB is okay. I was sorry to see CSI-Miami and CSI-NY canceled. The network continues to add to NCIS, so I can’t understand why they didn’t keep the other two CSIs. Cutting back the episodes means it will soon be canceled to make room for another reality show or comedy show with the canned laughter.
Carol, I liked NY, but Miami I only watched for the first two seasons. The fake drama that the lead character (I forget his name now, Carouso? Red hair, glasses) always showed was just too much. To this day my wife and I look at each other when there’s a cheesy line on TV and then say “And she (remove glasses) looked back…..DUN DUN DUN!” Anyway, NY would have gotten better ratings if it hadn’t had such a horrible timeslot. Always conflicted with something more established. I eventually ended up with 4 Tivos so I don’t miss anything now, but… Read more »
I’m not surprised, and I actually like “D.B” in this role but I still think to myself from time to time, “Where’s Grissom?!?!”
It just jumped the shark when he was let go. 🙁
