After a disappointing debut last spring and a lackluster summer run, many were surprised that FOX kept The Good Guys on the fall schedule. In hindsight, FOX execs may be wondering why they did as well.
The Good Guys is an action comedy that pairs a washed-up, old-school cop (Bradley Whitford) with a young, by-the-book detective (Colin Hanks). Others in the series include Jenny Wade, Diana-Maria Riva, Jennifer Besser, Kimberly Lynn Campbell, Kennith Edwards, Nathan Fane, and Arthur Wooldridge.
The May premiere attracted a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.93 million viewers. That put the TV show’s debut in fourth place in total viewership and tied for third in the coveted demographic with NBC’s Minute to Win It. Not a good start.
Over the summer, airing on Monday nights, Good Guys only mustered an average of a 1.2 rating in the demo and 4.01 million total viewers. FOX decided to cut the run short in August and saved the remaining new episodes for the fall season.
Unfortunately, Good Guys has been performing even worse this fall. The first episode attracted just a 0.9 demo rating and 2.8 million viewers. The ratings have fallen even lower since then, consistently placing in fifth place for the timeslot. Last Friday, viewership dropped 25% in the demo, hitting an all-time low with a 0.6 demo rating.
FOX has six episodes of Good Guys left and, understandably, there’s been no word about the network ordering any more. With ratings like these, the network will either pull the remaining episodes or just let them run out. Either way, it’s impossible to imagine that Good Guys won’t be cancelled.
What do you think? Do you like Good Guys? Why have people been watching other things on Friday nights? Anything you would change about the show?

I absolutely love this show!! FOX there is room for this show to pick up. I look forward to this show. It is definitely a favorite.
I LOVE this show, the two guys remind me of my best friend and I, plus I always wanted to be a cop and Stark reminds my wife, friend, and I of me!! This show never gets missed in my house, I love the Trans Am, my son cheers everytime the car is screeching around corners (so do I LOL). It’s like a cross of Starskey and Hutch, Dukes of Hazzard, and C.H.iP.’s. T.V. has lost most of my interest but this show is by far my favorite of the week. I really hope it continues on, I will be… Read more »
Please DO NOT cancel this show – truly makes me laugh out loud. Cancel the reality shows instead.
This show is freakin hilarious especially the scenes involving the young african american criminal informant. He keeps accidently getting involved with the criminals.I agree with everyone above this show makes me laugh loud and long. This show is like a parody of the law& order shows if they didnt take their work so seriously. This show works because Tom Hanks kid and Bradley are so opposite it works well. This is like a show networks were scared to produce 10-20 years ago.I am a fan-Dude drives a freakin 70s Trans Am for god’s sake
Cancel this show!! This has got to be the funniest show on TV in years and years. We think it is a laugh a minute. It reminds us of the fun-filled laugh nights we had when Everybody Loves Raymond and before that Home Improvement were on TV. Watching the Old Dogs show when Bradley Whitfords old partner guest starred was almost fall down olf fashioned comedy…TV can’t get any better than this show. Come on now Fox, lighten up, does everything have to be cops and robbers? Well, actually this is cops and robbers with an entirely new wonderful twist…harkens… Read more »
This show is absolutely fantastic. A second season doesn’t seem to be in the cards. This is the only non-HBO show I currently watch. It looks like I’m going to be abandoning regular television all together when this show gets cancelled. Thank you FOX. You have a trend of killing every show that people want to see and comes into your midst. I don’t like Family Guy or Futurama but I have many friends that do. You cancelled both. Both have returned. You cancelled Arrested Development which is and was superb. It seems in keeping with tradition that The Good… Read more »
I can understand why people who like serious police procedural drama might shy away from this show, but on the other hand, it’s not cannibalizing plotlines and crimes like other procedural dramas, so the stories seem fresh and they’re told in typical Matt Nix style where the chyron editor is a entertaining part of the storytelling process.
I’m glad Fox is still showing it, and I hope they at least allow the remaining episodes to air. I hope USA gives it a second season if it doesn’t grab the ratings for the major networks.
I agree 100% with the folks who love this show. I love it too!! I started watching it last summer (when it was on Monday nights) – and then followed it to Friday when they moved it not too long ago. it’s so cool and funny! it would make me sad if they cancelled it!
I would be so sad to see this program cancelled! My husband & I LOVE this show. I think it’s hilarious & I reallty love Detective Dan. That guy cracks me up!
its a great show, but on fridays? fox is better running bones/house repeats or put on a movie cuz no one is gonna watch a show on fridays, people are too cool to stay home, move the show and the viewership will go up
My whole family loves this show. I think if people were given the chance to watch it they would see how funny it is. We knew when they put it on Friday night that would be the end of it. This show makes us laugh harder than any show on television and we are going to be very sorry to see it cancelled.
Love the show. It’s a shame that the Networks don’t give a show any time to catch on. Just look at Monk for instance, It took a season or two and moving to another Network before Ratings improved. I just hope they don’t axe it. By the way you can get the Episodes on
i-tunes.
I LOVEEEEEEEEEEE this show. It saddens me that more people haven’t seen this. Showing on Fridays sure doesn’t help. I am sure if it an American Idol lead in it would have found its audience. I hope it makes it to DVD but I doubt it.
Well first of all, it’s very clear that Friday and Saturday nights are like death traps. People are put and not watching tv then. So really in short, they really didn’t want the show to get a second season. Why else would they put it on Fridays when the show is already not getting very good ratings? Fox don’t act like your so surprised. If the show was in like its 7th season, by then it would have some very loyal viewers that would watch it no matter what. Fox wanted the show to fail. PERIOD!!
Love the show and am disappointed to read that the ratings haven’t picked up. It’s VERY funny; always starts my weekend off on a zany note, which I look forward to every time. I think the show lacks true backing from Fox (I thought the re-run of House that precedes its current Friday-night slot would help, but apparently not). What’s even sadder is that money is the name of the game in TV, as in everything else, these days. Not much room for shows such as these where the actors are amazingly talented, the writing is ingenious and DIFFERENT, and… Read more »
