After a disappointing debut last spring and a lackluster summer run, many were surprised that FOX kept The Good Guys on the fall schedule. In hindsight, FOX execs may be wondering why they did as well.
The Good Guys is an action comedy that pairs a washed-up, old-school cop (Bradley Whitford) with a young, by-the-book detective (Colin Hanks). Others in the series include Jenny Wade, Diana-Maria Riva, Jennifer Besser, Kimberly Lynn Campbell, Kennith Edwards, Nathan Fane, and Arthur Wooldridge.
The May premiere attracted a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.93 million viewers. That put the TV show’s debut in fourth place in total viewership and tied for third in the coveted demographic with NBC’s Minute to Win It. Not a good start.
Over the summer, airing on Monday nights, Good Guys only mustered an average of a 1.2 rating in the demo and 4.01 million total viewers. FOX decided to cut the run short in August and saved the remaining new episodes for the fall season.
Unfortunately, Good Guys has been performing even worse this fall. The first episode attracted just a 0.9 demo rating and 2.8 million viewers. The ratings have fallen even lower since then, consistently placing in fifth place for the timeslot. Last Friday, viewership dropped 25% in the demo, hitting an all-time low with a 0.6 demo rating.
FOX has six episodes of Good Guys left and, understandably, there’s been no word about the network ordering any more. With ratings like these, the network will either pull the remaining episodes or just let them run out. Either way, it’s impossible to imagine that Good Guys won’t be cancelled.
What do you think? Do you like Good Guys? Why have people been watching other things on Friday nights? Anything you would change about the show?

Please don’t let this series die. My husband and I can’t wait to watch every week. This show is extremely funny. I love the characters especially DAN STARK. Why don’t you get rid of some of the CSI show? How many do you need anyway (CSI Miami, CSI New York, CSI) I am sure there is a few I have forgotten.
This show is brilliant. I love it. Matt Nix’s creation combined with Bradley Whitford’s ability to be completely ridiculous mixed with an original setting and topped off with Collin Hanks – who reminds me of his dad during his Bosom Buddies days….I just have to say, I don’t think this show gets enough credit. Moving a show around is always detrimental to supporting a following; combine it with the fact that it’s basically speaking to a crowd that right now is going to see their kids or friends’ football games at 8pm on Friday nights or going on dates to… Read more »
This is a great show. One of the best new shows to come along. I tell people about it and most of them say “What show are you talking about?” They need to advertise it better. This show is hilarious. My wife and I are in our mid 20’s and look forward to it every week.
My husband and I love this show. It’s hilarious!!! I agree with the other comments. They put it in a crappy timeslot, and didn’t do enough advertising. I think the other problem is that you watch just a few episodes of any sitcom/series, then it’s the season finale. We’re left haging, not knowing when the next season of episodes will start!!! Very frustrating. Years ago, you KNEW the shows you enjoyed would begin their new season in the fall and series finales would be in the spring. Now there’s no rhyme or reason to what the network does with any… Read more »
I agree. This is a great show. Light hearted and funny. We have enough cop dramas. Maybe the younger generation does not get it or maybe my generation? My husband and I are in our late 50s and we think the show hysterical.
Great show. I can’t wait each week to watch it. It’s just on a VERY BAD timeslot. FOX has a habit of ******** up good shows with awful times. It’s time to get rid of the sunday cartoons and put on some quality shows there.
Stark and Jack are such a great team. And Julius, even though he doesn’t want to be most of the time. I haven’t seen an episode yet that didn’t make me crack up out loud at least a half-dozen times. Most of the time my husband and I sit there and watch it with stupid grins on our faces while the 14 – yr old goes “What? What?”, lol. Put this with Bones, put it with House, but please, don’t put it down!!!!!!! And make the theme song available for ringtones, while your at it! Keep the show. PLEASE. If… Read more »
This show is so much fun. We DVR it so everyone in the house gets a chance to watch it. If it gets erased before we all see it, Heads Roll. Whitford is hilarious as Stark with his rockin’ ‘stache and Hanks is a superb straight man. The show consistently strikes the perfect balance of smartass and smart writing. Move this to any other day in the week , except Saturday, and it would be a strong contender against shows that sell the “same stuff, different city” 2, or even 3, nights a week. Not that I’m knocking NCIS, CSI,… Read more »
I love this show. It’s a shame they threw it into this crappy time slot… basically ensuring poor viewership. Great show, I hope Fox doesn’t cancel it.
Dont cancel…it’s a great show….very unique. I think a different timeslot would be helpfull.
I love this show!!!
The crappy time slot placement of this show, with a very anemic advertising campaign to go along with it, are really what’s to blame with this show. As a child of the 70’s and 80’s, I miss shows like “Magnum PI,” “The Rockford Files,” “Simon and Simon” and shows of that ilk that were fun and had characters you could really like. Hanks and Whitford offer a departure from the reality driven pap and the Glee/American Idol/America’s Next Top Model cloned garbage that is out there. Fox ought to place this in a different slot, give it some gas in… Read more »
How. Can. You. NOT. Love. This. show!????!
My husband and I like watching this show. It’s light-hearted and it’s nice to be able to share a good laugh. I know it’s up against CSI NY, but we always record it and watch it every week.
This and Modern Family are the best shows on network TV. Fox: move the show to a better slot, don’t kill it! I wonder to what extent the ratings take into account DVR’s? I never watch the show Friday night, but always do see it later in the following week.
